Recently, Flamengo decided to close the women's under-17 category on the eve of the 2024 Brazilian Championship, where it is the current runner-up. A decision that was the target of criticism from fans on social media after the news came out in the media last week.

The club took a position for the first time on the change in contact with ge. Vice-president of Women's Football at Flamengo, Vitor Zanelli explained that the CBF's short calendar in the category, (with only three games in the first phase of the Brazilian Championship) made the board change the planning and focus on greater fundraising through social projects:

- Due to the short calendar and few games, we redirected our development and training project to social projects, where we will be able to reach more people. We are fully aware that this will be very important for the evolution of the sport and attracting new talents.

Flamengo has had a base category in women's football since 2019: it started with the under-18s, and from 2022 it was divided into sub-17 and sub-20, following the example of the CBF. Since 2023, the club has received support from Vale, through the Federal Incentive Law, in eight centers in Rio de Janeiro that develop the practice of the sport from the age of 10 onwards. Now, the board will expand the initiative to other states, according to André Rocha, manager of Red and Black Women's Football:

- Flamengo has been fulfilling its part in promoting women's football in the state of Rio de Janeiro and , starting in August, we expanded this project to other states in our country. We understand that promoting the sport means providing access to sports with quality and minimum structure for good development, respecting all social and cultural aspects involved in this training. Our main objective is to detect and develop talent throughout Brazil so that in the future these girls can become part of our team (under-20).

The girls from these groups are monitored in assessments, a or twice a week, and compete in tournaments (last year, the club participated in two Conmebol competitions, the Development League, with these girls). With the change, the idea is to encourage them to stay closer to their homes until they are 16/17 years old and then be evaluated for Flamengo's under-20 team, which is currently competing in the quarter-finals of the Brazilian Championship against São Paulo. Paulo.

Flamengo was the only one of the big clubs in Rio de Janeiro that maintained a female under-17 category. Fluminense and Vasco had it on a seasonal basis for a given competition (they competed in the Carioca U-17 in 2022, but never in the Brazilian Championship). Botafogo does not work with youth women.

The Flamengo , historically recognized for its strong player training base, has faced a frequent reality in football: the departure of young athletes to rival clubs. The club's youth categories, widely contested and with a constant renewal of talent, mean that not all players are able to pursue a career at Rubro-Negro. This generates significant turnover, with some players transferring to other teams in search of more opportunities.

One of the most recent cases of this movement is that of Levy Benjamin, an athlete who was part of the U13 from Flamengo, but who, around five weeks ago, was announced as a reinforcement for Botafogo. The young player is a promise of Rio football and plays in two positions: attacking midfielder and left-back. The athlete's versatility caught the attention of Alvinegro, who integrated him into their base squad.

THE CLUB HAS NEW DIRECTIONS

This scenario, however, , is not an exception. In total, six players who were in the youth categories of Flamengorecently migrated to Botafogo. The list includes athletes of different age groups and positions. João Gabriel, U-11 right-back, Lorran Egon, U-12 defender, Pietro França, U-12 attacking midfielder, Gustavo, U-13 defender, Levy Benjamin, left-back and U-12 attacking midfielder Sub-13, and Miguel Ramiro, attacker of the Sub-13, are the names that left Flamengo and are now part of Botafogo.

The departure of these young athletes raises a warning for the Flamengo, mainly in relation to competition in the development of Rio football promises. Botafogo, like other clubs in Rio de Janeiro, has invested in attracting talent that, for some reason, does not stick to the red and black base. This phenomenon is common, especially in clubs that have a large number of athletes at the base, which makes it difficult to retain all players who have potential.
