Flamengo beat Chelsea 3-1 on Friday in the second round of Group D of the Club World Cup. With the result, they now have six points and are close to securing their place in the round of 16. But what will be needed to confirm their place this Friday?

SEE HOW

The second round of the bracket will have one more match: Los Angeles vs. Espérance at 7:00 p.m. (Brasília time). Before the ball starts rolling, the standings are as follows:

  • 1st) Flamengo : 6 points
  • 2nd) Chelsea: 3 points
  • 3rd) Los Angeles FC: 0 points
  • 4th) Hope: 0 points

The championship rules provide for the following tiebreaker criteria : direct confrontation, best goal difference, most goals scored, fewest red and yellow cards and draw. In this context, still this Friday, Flamengo...

  • They will qualify if Los Angeles and Espérance draw, as they would not be reached by two teams.
  • They qualify if Espérance wins because, in the worst case scenario, there would be a three-way tie with six points (Flamengo, Chelsea and Espérance) and, in this case, the first tiebreaker criterion is a direct confrontation (Fla beat Chelsea and Espérance)
  • You will have to wait until the last round if Los Angeles wins as there could be a three-way tie at six points (Flamengo, Chelsea and Los Angeles)

FINALLY

Therefore, of the three possible results, Flamengo will only not be guaranteed a place in advance if LA FC beats the Tunisian team. Even in this scenario, Rubro-Negro will only need a draw against the American team to guarantee qualification and first place in Group D. The last round of the group is scheduled for Tuesday, at 10 pm (Brasília time), with two games:

  • Esperance x Chelsea
  • Los Angeles x Flamengo

The September FIFA World Cup has ended , but the teams are already planning their next matches. Uruguay has confirmed two friendlies in October, against the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan, both in Malaysia, which could directly impact Flamengo .

Uruguay faces the Dominican Republic on October 10th in Kuala Lumpur. Three days later, they face Uzbekistan in Malacca . These matches are part of the team's preparation for the 2026 World Cup, for which La Celeste has qualified.

Although the Brazilian soccer calendar is interrupted during the FIFA World Cup, the strain of the long trip is a concern . Players like Arrascaeta , Varela, and Matías Viña, already heavily used this season, may feel the effects of the logistics.

HOW URUGUAY ARRIVES

In the last FIFA World Cup, Marcelo Bielsa's team confirmed their place in the World Cup. They played two matches: a 3-0 victory over Peru and a 0-0 draw with Chile . Arrascaeta, Varela, and Viña were called up, but only the full-back and the defender played in the second match.

AND FLAMENGO

Meanwhile, Flamengo focuses on the Brasileirão. Championship leader, Filipe Luís' team faces Juventude this Sunday (14), at 4 pm (Brasília time), at Alfredo Jaconi, for the 23rd round. Championship leader, Mengão has 47 points, three more than Cruzeiro, with one game less than Raposa.

The 2026 World Cup qualifiers came to an end last Tuesday (09), and Flamengo striker Gonzalo Plata made his presence felt in the tournament with the Ecuadorian national team . Having qualified, the player highlighted that the objective now is to turn his attention to the club before thinking about the World Cup.

Flamengo's Gonzalo Plata after qualifying for the World Cup: "Focus on our clubs"

"Now all that's left is to make the most of the fact that we're going to the World Cup. Focus on our clubs before thinking about the World Cup and do things in the best way possible ," said Gonzalo Plata , after Ecuador's 1-0 victory over Argentina.

PARTICIPATION IN THE FIFA DATE

A regular in Ecuador's squad, Plata played in both matches on this FIFA World Cup . He came on in the second half of the 0-0 draw against Paraguay, playing 20 minutes. Against Argentina, he started and played until the 25th minute of the second half.

NUMBERS FOR FLAMENGO IN 2025

A key player in Filipe Luís's scheme, the striker has already played 32 games this season, with four goals and eight assists . Plata is competing for the starting left wing spot with Luiz Araújo, establishing himself as an attacking alternative for the red-and-black squad.

FLAMENGO'S NEXT GAME

Having qualified with his national team and at the coach's disposal, Gonzalo Plata could return to the field for the Brasileirão this Sunday (14). Flamengo faces Juventude, at 4 pm (Brasília time), at Alfredo Jaconi, for the 23rd round. The Mais Querido leads the competition with 47 points, three more than Cruzeiro, who have played one more game.

Last Thursday (04), the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) punished Bruno Henrique with a 12-game suspension , in addition to a fine of R$60,000, placing the attacker under Article 243-A of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice.

Flamengo, however, has already filed a request for a stay of absence so that the number 27 remains available until the case is judged by the full court . Therefore, there is a possibility that he will play in the next Brasileirão match.

THE CURRENT SCENARIO

For now, Bruno Henrique is prevented from entering the field. If the suspension effect is not granted in time, the player will be out of the duel against Juventude , this Sunday (14). While awaiting the decision, the striker trains normally with the squad at Ninho do Urubu and participated in the activities both on Wednesday (10) and Thursday (11).

FLAMENGO'S NEXT GAME

Without knowing whether or not they will have the number 27, Filipe Luís' team returns to the field on Sunday (14), at 4 pm (Brasília time), against Juventude , at Alfredo Jaconi Stadium, for the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship, seeking to remain at the top of the competition.

28-YEAR TABOO

In the first round, the Red-Blacks thrashed their opponents 6-0, their biggest victory in the match. Even so, there's a taboo to be broken : Mengão hasn't won at Alfredo Jaconi since 1997, when they managed to leave with a 1-0 lead thanks to an own goal by Rodrigo Silva.
