Flamengo is preparing for a decisive clash this Friday (20), against Chelsea , in the second round of Group D of the FIFA Club World Cup. The match will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, in the United States , and will start at 3 pm (Brasília time). The duel rekindles an old rivalry between the Mais Querido and the clubs from England.
Throughout history, the Brazilian team has faced English opponents on ten occasions , presenting a balanced record: four wins, two draws and four defeats, with 17 goals scored and 16 conceded.
The history between the teams from Brazil and England reveals some notable clashes. The first recorded duel took place in 1948, against Southampton, with a 3-1 defeat at São Januário. The following year, Flamengo got their revenge by beating Arsenal by the same score, also in Rio de Janeiro.
Some of the most notable matches include the 4-0 win over Burnley in 1957 at the Camp Nou and the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest in 1958 in Belgium. In the same year, there was another draw, this time with Bolton in Paris.
Other notable clashes include the 2-1 win against Leeds United in 1994 in Malaysia and the historic 3-0 win against Liverpool in the 1981 Club World Cup in Tokyo.
However, not all matches were favorable. Flamengo suffered a significant 5-0 defeat to Chelsea in 1998 , at the Amsterdam International Tournament, held in the city of Arnhem, Netherlands.
The reunion between Flamengo and Chelsea has a special flavor. 26 years after the defeat in the European friendly , the Rubro-Negro will have the opportunity to seek revenge on a much more important stage: the Club World Cup.
