Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, revealed behind-the-scenes details of a deal the club ruled out at the start of the season. In an interview with Flamengo TV, where he also revealed expectations for a busy transfer window , the director explained that the club had been excited about the potential signing of a defender from the Brazilian national team, but backed down after receiving a warning from the scouting department .

According to Bap, the technical analysis showed that the defender, although qualified, didn't fit the team's playing style: "There was a defender we evaluated at the beginning of the year, from the Brazilian national team. The scouts were really excited—myself included . But the scout said, 'He's a slow defender, he only plays well on teams with a low line. Flamengo plays with a high line. It's going to be a nightmare, because he's not fast and can't recover,'" the director explained.
"And then he shows five or six videos with exactly like that. Situations that this defender faced on his team and that would be common at Flamengo . You watch and think: ' For God's sake, he's not going to be able to handle it, he's going to get the ball in the back all the time .' That doesn't mean he's a bad player, it just doesn't fit our model," he added.
The president used the example to illustrate how he is involved in the Football Department's decisions. Bap stated that he usually participates in hiring decisions after understanding the technical criteria used by the analysis teams and coaching staff.
He recently intervened to block the arrival of Irish striker Mikey Johnston from West Bromwich Albion (ENG). In the same interview, he justified his withdrawal by claiming that medical tests indicated a risk that wasn't worth the investment.
"I get involved when I understand the methods and can see that something isn't coherent. Mikey's case was the same. There was an important medical alert, and we made the decision not to follow it ," concluded the Flamengo president.
