A starter on Fluminense's side, Marcelo was injured after 12 minutes in the Recopa final and was doubtful to face Flamengo, on Sunday, at Maracanã. The athlete felt discomfort in his thigh and was replaced by Diogo Barbosa. Flu opened the Recopa decision against LDU, in Ecuador, and will play the return match next Thursday.

According to Espião Estatístico, from GE, this is the twenty-ninth time that Marcelo has left for the entry of another left-back, since arriving at Fluminense. Five of these opportunities were due to physical problems. In the match between Mengão and Flu, in the round of 16 of the 2023 Copa do Brasil, Marcelo also asked to leave, in the first half. Flamengo ended up qualifying.

Possibly without Marcelo against Flamengo this Sunday (25th), at 4pm, Fernando Diniz could start Guga, Alexander or Diogo Barbosa himself. It all depends on whether the experienced full-back will be available to face LDU the other week. If he remains out, the third reserve in the sector must be selected against Rubro-Negro.

Third place in 2023, Flamengo wants to win the Guanabara Cup to start the season on the right foot, different from last year . For this to happen, they need to beat Flu at the weekend and then, they can draw with Madureira to be champion. The first placed team overall (GB Cup champion) faces fourth in the State semi-final.

SEARCH FOR THE TITLE

Flamengo still plays twice in the Guanabara Cup, a single round of the Championship Carioca 2024. Rubro-Negro faces Fluminense this Sunday (25), at Maracanã, in the 10th round. Then, in round 11, Flamengo faces Madureira in a game initially scheduled for Saturday, March 2nd.

Leader with 21 points and six wins, Flamengo is ahead of Fluminense on goal difference . Rubro-Negro conceded just one goal in nine rounds, but scored 18 times. Fluminense, on the other hand, has a positive goal difference of 10. Therefore, a series of scenarios can be imagined for Fla to be champion.

If there is a draw in Fla x Flu and the two rivals win in the last round , Flamengo will be champions unless Flu takes the seven goals advantage. If Fla beats Flu, but loses in the last round and Flu wins in the last round. In this case, Fla will be champion if Tricolor doesn't clear the goal difference.

If Flu beats Fla and wins in the last round, they will be champions. If Fla wins both games, they will be champions. If Fla beats Fluminense, but draws with Madureira, they will be champions. If Flu beats Fla, but draws with Botafogo, they will be champions.

The night after the 1-0 defeat to Peñarol, coach Tite was faced with a barrage of criticism from Flamengo fans. The result did not please many, and the pressure increased considerably on the coach. In a press conference, Tite addressed these reactions calmly, highlighting that criticism is a natural reflection of the fans' passion for the club, especially in moments of frustration with the results on the field.

The coach's statements did not deny the seriousness of the situation, but he opted for an optimistic approach. Tite believes that, with work and a good performance in the second leg, Flamengo can reverse the situation and regain the fans' confidence.

FLAMENGO HAS ITS NEW PROBLEMS

Flamengo entered on the field against Peñarol in an important match, with great expectations of a good result. However, the 1-0 home defeat was a blow to the fans and put more pressure on the squad and coaching staff. Flamengo, one of the most successful clubs and with the biggest fans in Brazil, tends to deal with the constant expectation of victories and good performance. When these objectives are not achieved, reactions are quick to emerge.

The defeat left the team in a delicate situation in the competition, which makes the second leg even more decisive. The need for a positive result in the second match against Peñarol is not only to advance in the competition, but also to calm the spirits of a fan base that is increasingly demanding.

In the last round of the Libertadores group stage, Flamengo, now under the command of coach Tite, saw its long undefeated streak as home team come to an end. The 1-0 defeat marked the end of a run of 28 matches without losing at home in the competition. The negative result was a shock for the fans, mainly because it occurred at a crucial moment in the season and because of the expectations surrounding the team led by a renowned coach like Tite.

The last time Flamengo had been defeated at Maracanã by the Libertadores was in April 2019, when Peñarol beat the red-black team by the same score of 1-0. The current setback, therefore, brought back memories of that game, creating a feeling of déjà vu among fans . It is worth remembering that, at that time, Flamengo was in a moment of transition and seeking to consolidate itself as one of the powers of South American football.

A BREAK OF PARADIGMS

With the arrival of Tite at the helm of Flamengo, the expectation was that the team would gain tactical consistency and competitiveness in important tournaments, such as the Libertadores itself. Tite, who has a respected CV, mainly for his work in the Brazilian national team, was hired with the mission of making Flamengo become dominant again both on the national and international scene.

The defeat at home, however , served as a cold water for part of the fans who expected a quiet victory. Their unbeaten record at home was seen as one of Flamengo's trump cards in continental competition, a guarantee of strength within their domains. By losing this status, the team will now need to deal with the pressure and doubts that arise from this result.

The attacker Carlinhos should be Flamengo's starter in the classic against Botafogo this Sunday (18), in the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship. The number 22 must take over the space left by Pedro and Gabigol. Playing against the Rio rival brings back good memories for the player. In this year's Carioca he scored two goals against Botafogo.

At the time, Carlinhos was wearing the Nova Iguaçu number 9 shirt. The match was held in February, at the Engenhão stadium, in the sixth round of the tournament. Botafogo led 2-0, but Carlinhos led his team's reaction by scoring two goals. In the end, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

The game against Botafogo will be Carlinhos' fourth as a starter with the Rubro-Negro shirt. He was part of Tite's lineup against Palmeiras, Atlético-MG and São Paulo. Against the Minas Gerais club, number 22 scored the second goal of the game.

Carlinhos should have a sequence in the starting team

Without Pedro, Gabigol and Everton Cebolinha, Mengão's number 22 should gain a sequence in Tite's starting team . In addition to the match against Botafogo, he should be selected in the starting eleven against Bolívar, on Thursday (22), in the return game of the round of 16.

As Pedro and Gabigol only return in September , Carlinhos should also play against: Bragantino (25); in the first game of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil (27, 28 or 29); and Corinthians (01/09).

Striker projects season titles

Signed by Mais Querido after being second top scorer in the Campeonato Carioca, striker Carlinhos projected to win all the titles that Flamengo has to compete for this season. The projection was made during 'Carona com Smigol', a FLATV program.

In the conversation, he said that “this energy of ours, this vibration of ours in each training session and each game, everyone donating to the maximum, so nothing is better than finishing as champions of the Brazilian Championship, we will achieve that, God willing. Let's look for all possible titles.”
