Flamengo suffered a 1-0 defeat to Santos on Wednesday night (16), at Vila Belmiro, in the 15th round of the Brazilian Championship. The only goal of the match was scored by Neymar, who, in his return as a starter at the Santos stadium, scored in the final minutes and secured the three points for the home team.
Despite the result, Rubro-Negro remains at the top of the championship with 27 points , but now sees Cruzeiro closing in, just one point behind. The Rio de Janeiro team, which dealt with important absences in the squad, returns to the field on Sunday (20), at 7:30 pm (Brasília time), in the classic against Fluminense, at Maracanã.
Léo was also self-critical when commenting on the defensive error that allowed Neymar 's goal: " We knew they were going to play for one ball and they had that ball there at the end of the game. It was a defensive oversight on our part and that can't happen to anyone who wants to be Brazilian champion," said the defender before praising Santos' number 10.
"It's Neymar. You always have to have a different marking on him. But we played our game without thinking much about Neymar. We knew he could decide the game with any play. It was our carelessness. A guy as different as him can't have that much freedom . When we missed the goal, we were very exposed and open. Unfortunately, he was lucky and deserved to score. Now we have to work hard and think about the derby," he added.
After the final whistle, defender Léo Pereira analyzed Mengão's performance and lamented the team's lack of offensive productivity. According to the defender, the team controlled possession for much of the match but failed to be effective in attack:
" We controlled much of the game, that's true . I think we lacked the final pass. We created very little. The team that's leading the league and always scores goals, we created very little to finish and come away with a positive result," commented the defender, still on the field.

On Wednesday night (06), Flamengo beat Atlético-MG 1-0 at Arena MRV , in Belo Horizonte, in the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil. With the same score as the first leg, but in favor of Rubro-Negro, the decision of the spot was left to the penalty shootout . In the penalties, the Minas Gerais team was more efficient and advanced to the semifinals.
Despite a strong performance over the 90 minutes, the result wasn't enough. In the penalty shootout, Atlético-MG converted four of their five attempts, while Mengão missed a penalty each from Wallace Yan and Samuel Lino.
After the end of the match, Filipe Luís, who led the team in the coach's absence , commented on the starting lineup and explained that the decisions were made based on the physical conditions of the available athletes.
"The decision on the starting lineup first involved some who didn't travel, Bruno Henrique and Luiz Araújo, who weren't fit to play , were barred. Some couldn't start because they were on vacation, like Lino, Royal, and Saúl," said Filipe Luís .
"Arrascaeta felt discomfort in the last game. And I put together a team with the players I have, just like in the first game , enough to win and play a great game. That's how they did it," said the coach.
Now out of the Copa do Brasil competition, the Rio team's focus is now fully on the Brazilian Championship . Next Saturday (09), Mengão hosts Mirassol at Maracanã, at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), for the 18th round of the competition.
