Corinthians management, however, can still reverse the situation if it pays off the debt and seeks release from FIFA. The club has until the end of November to exercise the goalkeeper's purchase clause, but, due to restrictions, it needs to race against time to resolve the issue and guarantee the player's permanence in its squad.

On Flamengo's side, the board is closely monitoring the development of the situation between Corinthians and FIFA, but remains open to future negotiations with Grupo City, if the São Paulo club is unable to complete the purchase. The Rio team has already received initial contact from the conglomerate interested in the archer and shows interest in discussing the sale of the player, if the deal with Corinthians does not materialize.
Hugo Souza, revealed in Mengão's youth categories, still has a link with the Rio club, which monitors market movements and awaits the outcome of negotiations before making a definitive decision.

Flamengo already knows its next opponent in the Copa Libertadores : Estudiantes de La Plata (ARG), in the quarterfinals. Even before the ball kicked off, the president of the Argentine club and idol Juan Sebastián Verón took to social media to criticize CONMEBOL, following Independiente's exclusion from the Copa Sudamericana.
