The Brazilian team faced a severe setback in the Copa América, being eliminated in the quarter-finals by Uruguay. Asked about the team's performance, Zico severely criticized the attitude of captain Danilo, the right-back coveted by Flamengo. According to the greatest idol in the history of Rubro-Negro, a captain cannot argue with fans, as Danilo did. Furthermore, Zico defended Vini Jr., who was also the target of criticism.

“This generation has to change its stance on the Brazilian team. First, the team captain, with all the difficulties, cannot argue with fans. The fan is right, let him vent. You stop and analyze. Offenses happen, and even worse coming from opponents,” said Zico in an interview with the podcast ‘A roast for…’. The red-and-black idol emphasized the importance of more resilient and understanding leadership.

The incident involving Danilo occurred in the Brazilian team's debut, in a goalless draw against to Costa Rica. The captain argued with fans in the stands, saying: “No one is playing here.” Danilo, whose contract with Juventus runs until June 2025, is an old wish of Flamengo, but the player stated that Mengão and Santos are his priorities if he returns to Brazil.

Vini Jr. was also the target of criticism by the press and fans due to his performance at the Copa América. However, Zico came to the defense of the young player. For Flamengo's eternal number 10, the Brazilian team needs new leaders to protect young talents like Vini Jr. and Rodrygo. Zico highlighted that the responsibility of carrying the team should not fall solely on the former Flamengo player.

“The Seleção needs players who command more respect. Just because Vinicius Júnior and Rodrygo won the Champions League doesn't mean they will automatically have respect. Today, Brazil is sixth in the World Cup qualifiers, something unprecedented,” added Zico. He concluded by asking for positive energies for the renewal of the National Team and for Brazil to once again be a protagonist in world football.

The Brazilian National Team returns to the field on the 5th and 10th September against Ecuador and Paraguay, respectively, in the World Cup qualifiers. With sixth place being the last one that guarantees a place in the 2026 World Cup, Data FIFA serves as a warning to Flamengo. Pedro, Fabrício Bruno and Gerson are fighting for places in the national team and could be absent from the club in September. Furthermore, foreign players such as Arrascaeta, De La Cruz, Varela, Viña and Erick Pulgar are sure to be present in their teams.

Several Uruguayan newspapers covered the tie between Flamengo and Vasco this Sunday (15). Among the main vehicles, “El País” and “Montevidéu Portal” highlighted that Luiz Araújo left the classic with a possible knee injury and could be absent for Rubro-Negro in the first game of the Libertadores quarter-finals against Peñarol, next Thursday (19).

Luiz Araújo played just 18 minutes in the classic. The attacker felt his knee after a challenge with a Vasco defender and even tried to continue on the field, but ended up being replaced by Arrascaeta. At half-time, Flamengo issued a statement informing that the player will be re-evaluated by the medical department at Ninho do Urubu. The squad will be presented again this Monday afternoon (16).

Uruguayan newspapers consider the possible absence of Luiz Araújo a big problem for Mengão. The athlete is a starter in Tite's team, with the most matches for Flamengo this season (50) and leader in assists (10).

The newspaper 'El País' classified the player as a key player for the team: “The injury to Luiz Araújo, one of the most important players in Mengão's squad, expands the list of injured players just a few days before the clash against Peñarol in the Copa Libertadores.”

The 'Montevideo Portal' followed the same line, highlighting the importance of the striker: “In addition to the result, another bad news for Peñarol's next rival in the Copa Libertadores it was the departure of Luiz Araújo. The fast right-winger, starter for Flamengo, felt pain in his right knee after a blow.”

Currently, Flamengo's medical department has five injured players: De La Cruz, Michael, Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro, with the trio formed by Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro only expected to return in 2025.

Expectations for De La Cruz in the game against Peñarol

While awaiting Luiz Araújo's diagnosis, coach Tite revealed, after the draw against Vasco, that he hopes to count on De La Cruz for the duel against Peñarol . According to the coach, the Uruguayan's presence could improve the effectiveness of the team, which has shown good performance in recent matches.

“In training, when he (De la Cruz) was leaving, I asked 'is there enough for 20? minutes?'. He smiled, because he couldn't. The physical department definitely said they were not in a position to do so. Not even him feeling well. Especially because you have to talk to the athlete, because then there is the charge. Hopefully, and I hope that he can be there on Thursday to reproduce today's performance, with greater effectiveness”, said Tite in the post-game press conference between Flamengo x Vasco.

Flamengo is focused on the duel against Peñarol (URU), in the quarter-finals of the Libertadores, which takes place on Thursday (19), at 7pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã. Rubro-Negro has an important asset to advance in the competition: a sequence of 27 games without defeat at the 'Templo Sagrado'.

With total focus on the Libertadores, Flamengo accumulates excellent numbers playing at Maracanã. There are 27 unbeaten matches in the continental competition, with 24 wins and only three draws. Furthermore, Mengão reached the mark of 16 consecutive victories at the stadium in the Libertadores.

Although the record is impressive, one detail still worries fans. Flamengo's last defeat at home in the Libertadores was against Peñarol, in 2019. In that game, the team led by Abel Braga lost 1-0, in a match marked by a poor performance and the expulsion of Gabigol.

Flamengo's numbers at Maracanã in the Libertadores:

27 games without losing

24 wins and three draws

16 consecutive victories at Maracanã

Last draw: Flamengo 0x0 Vélez Sarsfield (2021)

Last defeat: Flamengo 0x1 Peñarol (2019)

Flamengo will face Peñarol this Thursday (19), in the quarter-finals of the Libertadores. The match takes place at Maracanã, starting at 7pm (Brasília time). ESPN (closed channel) and Disney+ (streaming) will broadcast the duel.

The transfer window is in its final days open and Danilo's name, currently at Juventus (ITA), was mentioned at Flamengo. However, Mais Querido's executive director, Bruno Spindel, confirmed that there are no negotiations with the right-back.

“There was no contact with Danilo. We have two right-backs who we trust a lot”, said Bruno Spindel, this Friday (30). The manager opened the game after questions about Mais Querido remaining active in the window and completing the signings of Carlos Alcaraz, Alex Sandro and Gonzalo Plata.

TWO PLAYERS IN THE POSITION

It is worth remembering that Flamengo has two full-backs who play the role on the right. Varela is Tite's starter, while Wesley is the reserve. Highlighting that the young man was almost sold to Atalanta, from Italy. However, due to delays in documents, the agreement was terminated.

TRANSFERS OF BASE YOUNG PEOPLE

With the final days of the transfer window open, Flamengo managed to complete the signings of Gonzalo Plata, Carlos Alcaraz and Alex Sandro on time. Furthermore, Rubro-Negro also arranged for Igor Jesus to leave for Estrela Amadora (POR) and Matheus Gonçalves for Red Bull Bragantino.

FOCUS ON THE NEXT GAME

Thus, with two reinforcements already at his disposal, Tite ends the red-black team's preparation this Saturday (31) for the clash against Corinthians. Mais Querido returns to the field this Sunday (1), against the São Paulo team, for the 25th round of the Brasileirão.
