Jorge Jesus and Tite are the two names that most caught the public's attention among the coaches who could lead Flamengo in 2024. With the departure of Jorge Sampaoli, Mengão's directors are considering the one who best fits the office. The problem is that the decision is not as easy as it appears to be. Even though the two coaches mentioned above have an impressive track record, they both have factors working against them.

Firstly, it is important to point out that, even though Fla has shown interest in the two coaches, there are other professionals who are being targeted for the position. Furthermore, no offer was made and, as far as we know, Mais Querido's directors did not contact the representatives of any of the coaches. Especially because some of them are employed.

This is the case of Jorge Jesus, who currently coaches Al-Hilal (ARA), Neymar's team. Even though there are rumors circulating in the media that he will be fired, nothing has been confirmed yet. Tite, on the other hand, is on a kind of sabbatical year (without working), as he did not receive any major offers for this 2023 season, after being removed from command of the Brazilian National Team at the end of 2022.

According to the Tite himself, he was prioritizing European clubs to work with, but, if nothing interesting comes into his hands, he is willing to return to national football at the start of next season.

As previously stated, there is internal resistance against the two coaches. According to 'O Globo Esportes', many members of Fla's board of directors do not want Jesus to return due to the way he handled the club's latest attempts to bring him in. Tite, in turn, has a very strong image in command of the national team, especially after the failure in the 2022 World Cup. Furthermore, the reservations that come from within the squad, namely Gabigol, must be highlighted.

Everything may become clearer after Sampaoli's concrete dismissal. The Argentine is already out of the 2024 season, but he could still be responsible for the group until the end of the year, we don't know. The truth is that, depending on the result of the next game, against São Paulo, he could end up with an even shorter stay at Flamengo than he expected.

Formal conversations, with whoever Flamengo's next coach will be, should only begin after this weekend. Just as was done with the players, the club's management chose to leave any type of negotiations until after the Copa do Brasil final - which is this Sunday (24th) - in order not to distract anyone from this great objective.

Several Uruguayan newspapers covered the tie between Flamengo and Vasco this Sunday (15). Among the main vehicles, “El País” and “Montevidéu Portal” highlighted that Luiz Araújo left the classic with a possible knee injury and could be absent for Rubro-Negro in the first game of the Libertadores quarter-finals against Peñarol, next Thursday (19).

Luiz Araújo played just 18 minutes in the classic. The attacker felt his knee after a challenge with a Vasco defender and even tried to continue on the field, but ended up being replaced by Arrascaeta. At half-time, Flamengo issued a statement informing that the player will be re-evaluated by the medical department at Ninho do Urubu. The squad will be presented again this Monday afternoon (16).

Uruguayan newspapers consider the possible absence of Luiz Araújo a big problem for Mengão. The athlete is a starter in Tite's team, with the most matches for Flamengo this season (50) and leader in assists (10).

The newspaper 'El País' classified the player as a key player for the team: “The injury to Luiz Araújo, one of the most important players in Mengão's squad, expands the list of injured players just a few days before the clash against Peñarol in the Copa Libertadores.”

The 'Montevideo Portal' followed the same line, highlighting the importance of the striker: “In addition to the result, another bad news for Peñarol's next rival in the Copa Libertadores it was the departure of Luiz Araújo. The fast right-winger, starter for Flamengo, felt pain in his right knee after a blow.”

Currently, Flamengo's medical department has five injured players: De La Cruz, Michael, Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro, with the trio formed by Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro only expected to return in 2025.

Expectations for De La Cruz in the game against Peñarol

While awaiting Luiz Araújo's diagnosis, coach Tite revealed, after the draw against Vasco, that he hopes to count on De La Cruz for the duel against Peñarol . According to the coach, the Uruguayan's presence could improve the effectiveness of the team, which has shown good performance in recent matches.

“In training, when he (De la Cruz) was leaving, I asked 'is there enough for 20? minutes?'. He smiled, because he couldn't. The physical department definitely said they were not in a position to do so. Not even him feeling well. Especially because you have to talk to the athlete, because then there is the charge. Hopefully, and I hope that he can be there on Thursday to reproduce today's performance, with greater effectiveness”, said Tite in the post-game press conference between Flamengo x Vasco.

He mentioned that coach Andrade, responsible for the title of that year, it gave players greater freedom, which allowed the team to act more freely and creatively.

— I think the 2009 team is better. What's the difference between the 2009 and '19 teams? In 2019, players were more ready to play in the slots they had to play. In 2009, we played free. Andrade didn't train much, he gave him freedom — explained Kleberson.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2009 FLAMENGO

When remembering the 2009 team, Kleberson highlighted the technical quality and intelligence cognitive skills of that season's players, such as Adriano, Petkovic, Zé Roberto and Léo Moura, who, according to him, had the freedom to play according to the circumstances of the match.

— With all due respect to Flamengo's 2019 team, to the players... Technically, cognitively, I think it was a little more. There are two teams (laughs) — commented Kleberson.

Flamengo in 2009, which ended up champion under the command of Andrade, had a base formed by Bruno; Léo Moura, Ronaldo Angelim, David Braz and Juan; Airton, Willians and Toró; Zé Roberto and Adriano.
