Flamengo and Internacional face each other this Saturday (29), at 9pm, at Maracanã , in another chapter of this great confrontation of Brazilian football. For the red-black fans, one game in particular remains alive in their memory : the 4-0 rout over Colorado, in 2009, with a masterful performance by Adriano Imperador and a goal by Emerson Sheik .

More than just a significant victory, that result symbolized a turning point for Flamengo in the campaign that would culminate in the sixth Brazilian championship.

The context of the game

At that time, Flamengo was going through an unstable phase in the Brasileirão and had just suffered a 5-0 defeat to Coritiba . Under pressure, the team needed to respond immediately to continue dreaming of the top positions.

The newspaper UOL highlighted at the time:

"The red-black team beat Internacional 4-0. Adriano, three times, and Emerson (Sheik). The victory eases the situation of coach Cuca , who is under threat in his position, and the mood after the defeat suffered in the last round."

The rout not only brought relief to the team and the fans, but also marked the beginning of a run that would lead Flamengo to the title.

History of the clash at Maracanã

Maracanã has always been a stage for great moments for Flamengo against Internacional. According to the FlaEstatística portal, the teams have faced each other 40 times at the stadium , with Rubro-Negro coming out on top on 24 occasions , in addition to eight draws and eight defeats .

Over the years, Internacional has established itself as a tough opponent , especially after winning the Libertadores and the World Cup, making the duels even more intense.

Flamengo's biggest victory over Internacional at Maracanã

In addition to the need for recovery, there was another factor that made that match special: Flamengo was looking for revenge for the elimination suffered in the Copa do Brasil , with a free kick goal by Andrezinho at Beira-Rio.

With the Maracanã packed, Cuca's team responded in style , crushing Colorado. The big name of the night was Adriano, who scored three times, while Emerson Sheik completed the scoring.

Flamengo lineup (2009):

Goalkeeper : Bruno

Defenders : Leo Moura (Fierro), Ronaldo Angelim, Welinton, Fabricio and Juan

Midfielders : Willians, Toró and Ibson (Petkovic)

Forwards : Adriano (Everton Cardoso) and Emerson Sheik

Adriano's show

The Emperor shone from the start of the match. With a precise chip , he opened the scoring and fired up the fans. Then, Emerson Sheik extended the lead. Before half-time, Adriano scored a great goal from a free kick , taking Flamengo to the locker room with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

In the second half, the number 99 (in that match, Adriano would become number 10 after the change of sports equipment supplier) closed the night with a penalty goal, consolidating the rout .

The Maracanã was pulsating with every move, with the fans feeling that this game could be the turning point of the season. And it was. From then on, Flamengo grew in the championship and, at the end of the year, celebrated the long-awaited sixth Brazilian championship.

This Thursday (18), Flamengo begins the dispute of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores against Estudiantes, at Maracanã. On the eve of the confrontation, the president and idol of the Argentine club, Juan Sebastián Verón, spoke about the expectations for the duel against Rubro-Negro.

DIFFERENT LEVELS

During an institutional event in La Plata, Verón highlighted the financial difference between the teams , with Mengão being the team with the highest market value among the tournament participants, but recalled Estudiantes ' tradition of overcoming opponents considered favorites.

Estudiantes' Verón on Flamengo in the Libertadores: "Yes, the challenge is difficult"

"Obviously, we know the power of our opponent, but we also know that we've been through similar situations against important teams, and that the club, given its history, has risen to the occasion. We've always kept this in mind: yes, the challenge is difficult, but we can excel and represent the club well , regardless of the result. We've experienced this before, and we continue to do so," the director stated.

VERON X FLAMENGO

In the early 1990s, Verón began his career at Estudiantes and played in the 2-0 victory over Flamengo in the 1994 Supercopa Libertadores . In addition to his former club, the former midfielder also shone for major teams such as Boca Juniors, Lazio, Manchester United and Inter Milan . In 2007, he returned to Estudiantes and was a key player in their 2009 Copa Libertadores victory.

Verón retired in 2014, but returned to the field three years later as a player-president . His last official match came in 2017, against Botafogo, also in the Copa Libertadores, during the group stage.
