Last Friday (10), Flamengo beat Vasco in the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB). However, apparently the game is “not over” yet. This Tuesday (14), the rival published a note criticizing Mais Querido's coach, Gustavo de Conti, calling him "irresponsible".
The reason was that after beating Cerrado, on Monday (13), the Rubro Negro coach gave an interview saying that the rim in São Januário was lower than normal. He also said that this contributed to making the game more difficult for Mais Querido.
"Many factors contributed (to the difficulty of the game). The rim was lower there (in São Januário), much lower than normal. You can see that most of the balls we kicked and they were long. This is something to see on their court (Vasco). This time it was a little uneven, it was very low" , said Gustavo de Conti, in an interview at Maracanãzinho, on Monday (14).
NOTE PUBLISHED BY VASCO
The rival did not like Gustavo's statements de Conti and made a point of responding with an official note. Furthermore, Vasco even called the Pride of the Nation coach "irresponsible" and guaranteed that all the measures established in the regulations were met.
“Vasco da Gama reinforces that it complies with all the rules set out in the NBB Caixa 23/24 regulation for holding games whether at home or away and reiterates that the game's technical delegate, a professional defined by the League, carried out the inspection, as scheduled, before the game. If there were any irregularities, we would be notified immediately”, says the note.
“In this case, the League itself can shed light on this absurd statement with the presentation of its delegate’s report, proving compliance with the regulations. by R10 Score Vasco da Gama. What is strange to us is that he or his team's coaching staff did not question this before or even during the game as required by the regulations. Without a doubt, the coach is being absolutely irresponsible with this statement”, concluded Vasco.
VICTORY AND NEXT CONFRONTATION
Despite the complaints, Mais Querido left São Januário with the victory . Turnaround and extra time. Flamengo scored 68-65, after being at a disadvantage for much of the match. This was one of the team's four victories in the NBB, after five rounds.
Therefore, Rubro Negro is preparing for the next match, after beating Cerrado Basquete, last Monday (13), by 89 to 71. The Pride of the Nation will face Brasília, this Thursday (16), at Maracanãzinho. The ball goes up at 7pm.
The teams that qualify from the two clashes will face each other in the quarter-finals of the competition and the return duels will take place this Wednesday (20)

One of Flamengo's biggest moves in 2025 was the signing of Jorginho, formerly of Arsenal (ENG). The number 21 quickly adapted to Filipe Luís's system and has already established himself as a starter in the Flamengo midfield. In an interview with ESPN, coach Mikel Arteta, who managed the Italian-Brazilian in England, recalled conversations with the player before his transfer to the Rio de Janeiro club .
Arteta talks about Jorginho at Flamengo: "He had a very clear desire to end his career in Brazil"
"We had several conversations to understand how far we wanted to go together, or not. He was very clear about his desire to finish his career in Brazil; he was waiting for an opportunity. When it came, I saw him very convinced, at every level ," Arteta said, before adding:
"First on a personal level, with his family, and then on a professional level, returning to compete in the country of his birth. It was an honor for me to have him here. I made the most of my day-to-day life with him, not only as a player , but also as a person and a leader . I wish him all the best," concluded the coach.
Flamengo officially announced Jorginho's arrival in June 2025, with the Club World Cup in mind. The club didn't have to pay Arsenal, as the player had already terminated his contract with the English club . Since then, the midfielder has played 13 games, scored one goal, and provided two assists.
With Jorginho available, Flamengo returns to the field this Wednesday (20) to face Internacional, at Beira-Rio, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), for the second leg of the round of 16 of the Libertadores . Mengão only needs a draw to qualify for the quarterfinals.
