This Thursday (1) the International Surfing Association (ISA) announced the suspension of judge Ben Lowe, who will no longer judge the performance of surfers at the 2024 Olympics. The entity's decision came after a photo that went viral in which the referee appears next to one of the athletes competing.

The photo in question was published last Monday. Australian surfer Ethan Ewing was off duty due to the poor sea conditions at Teahupoo, and shocked the web by appearing alongside coach Bede Durbidge and Ben Lowe, also an Australian and one of the Olympic referees who are judging the waves in the competition.

"These three boys from Straddie (an island in Australia) doing their job at the Olympics", read the caption of the published photo, which is no longer available.

In the decision, the ISA informed that it is : "it is inappropriate for a judge to interact in this way with an athlete" and that removing him from the Olympic judging panel "to protect the integrity and fairness of the competition".

AUSTRALIAN JUDGE HAD ALREADY BEEN THE TARGET OF PROTESTS

In April, Ben Lowe had already been the target of protests from CBSurf (Brazilian Surfing Confederation), which sent a letter to the ISA demonstrating concern about the integrity of the judging at the Olympics.

Remembering that it was Ben Lowe who judged Gabriel Medina at the Tokyo Olympics, where the Brazilian was eliminated by the Japanese Kanoa Igarashi, after the Australian judge's score.

This Sunday (23), Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto's race in China was affected by a failure on the first lap . When fighting for position at the start with Oliver Bearman, from Haas, the Brazilian lost control of the car and ended up in the gravel. The skid forced the young man to go to the pits, which caused him to distance himself from the pack.

Upon returning to the Shanghai International Circuit track on hard tyres, Gabriel Bortoleto was in last place, far behind 19th, his teammate Nico Hulkenberg . In the end, the Brazilian still managed to cross the finish line ahead of Nico and Yuki Tsunoda - with Alonso's retirement and the subsequent disqualifications of Leclerc, Hamilton and Gasly, he officially took 14th place.

After the race, the São Paulo native admitted his mistake and explained that the skid happened because he was on the dirty side of the track in the fight against Bearman. Bortoleto also assessed the not-so-good weekend in China and lamented the failure at the start :

" Today was definitely not an ideal race. After the first lap, the focus was on recovering and gathering as much information as possible about the car. Although our position was not favorable, it was good to continue and finish the race, because it was my first full race on a dry track ," said the Brazilian.

In the final part of the race, Bortoleto still saw Yuki Tsunoda go to the pits after having his front wing damaged and rose to 17th - he only gained three positions due to disqualifications after the end of the race.

" It's difficult to say where we could have been with a cleaner race. I wish this weekend had been more positive, but it is what it is. Now we move on and go to the factory to analyse what we learned from these first two races, prepare for Suzuka," he concluded.
