After Flamengo's 1-0 victory over Bahia, last Saturday (30), many questions were raised about the refereeing and the controversial decisions that took place during the match. The president of the CBF Arbitration Commission, Wilson Seneme, and the technical manager of VAR at CBF, Péricles Bassols, analyzed three moments from the game: the penalty disallowed on Ayrton Lucas, the expulsion of Kanu and the penalty on Bruno Henrique.
Ayrton Lucas was charged by midfielder Yago and referee Sávio Pereira Sampaio awarded a penalty, but the VAR intervened and canceled it due to the touch having occurred outside the area. Thus, Wilson Seneme cited the judge's distrust on the field and agreed with the final decision.
“Sávio, in principle, showed a certain doubt as to whether he was in or out. He decides a penalty, only then does the video referee start working. Visibly, you can see that it was outside the area, so they looked for an excellent angle. In this case, there is no doubt, there is no interpretation. It’s in or out”, said the president of the Arbitration Commission.
In Kanu’s expulsion, where Gerson started towards Bahia’s small area, but was pulled by the defender and received a free kick for Flamengo. , Seneme clarified the reason for the red and sees the correct position of the referee, with the VAR calling Sávio for review.
“Was the goalkeeper able to play that ball? No. Apart from the expelled player, was there another defender with the possibility of competing for this ball? No, and the distance they had was too great for them to compete. Another important point is the direction of the play, if Gerson was at the edge of the area, I would say there was no opportunity to score, but they are in a centralized area of the area. Therefore, it becomes a clear scoring opportunity. In our view, the review call was absolutely correct. It is possible to agree with the final decision”, declared the former referee.
After Kanu's expulsion, Gilberto went to kick the ball inside the area and hit Bruno Henrique's foot, which won a penalty for the Flamengo. The referee immediately awarded the penalty without needing help from VAR. Seneme, therefore, agreed with Sávio Pereira Sampaio's action.
“For us, yes, it is a kick with a lack of attention, consideration, and there was no precaution when kicking. Therefore, it became an infraction and a penalty, it was not minimal contact, it was the force of what would be a kick for the ball”, concluded Wilson Seneme.
