On July 14, 2019, the game Flamengo X Goiás took place. This match for the Brasileirão would be the beginning of a great and impressive story between Jorge Jesus and Flamengo. It was an avalanche that took the people of Goiás by surprise. With six goals, the Flamengo players cheered the Red-Black fans at Maracanã who went wild.

All the ingredients for a spectacular match were on the pitch! Rafinha's debut, Jorge Jesus' first game at Maracanã, sold out, and his return to the Brazilian Championship. Under the command of Arrascaeta, author of three goals and two assists, Flamengo thrashed Goiás, that Sunday.

At that time, Gabigol was still known by many as Gabriel Barbosa, number 2 of the team, but managed to score two goals. The other star was Bruno Henrique, completing the rout with a point as well.

Mengão's first goal was just five minutes in, starting with a lot of pressure. However, after a failure by Rodrigo Caio, Kayke from the rival team managed to tie. The game was tense, and Michael almost turned in favor of Goiás with a ball on the crossbar. But from the 43rd minute onwards, an unstoppable avalanche began. Bruno Henrique and Arrascaeta (twice) scored within six minutes to leave the team with a 4-1 lead.

In the second half, Goiás failed to react. Gabigol scored twice, both with passes from Arrascaeta to close the scoring. Flamengo could still have achieved a more elastic result had it not been for the opposing goalkeeper Tadeu, who made good saves, even preventing a great goal from Diego Ribas.

Rafinha made a good debut, showing part of what he really was able. In his first shot, he took two hats, balanced the ball on his head and drove the crowd crazy. The game also had the presence of Gerson and Pablo Marí, newly hired reinforcements at the time by Flamengo.

This was the first game in which Mister showed his magic on the team. In the previous match, in his debut, the Portuguese coach had a draw (1-1) against Athlético Paranaense, for the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Copa do Brasil. Athlético-PR ended up winning that Copa do Brasil, but it was the only important title that escaped from the hands of Jorge Jesus. The coach stayed at Mengão for less than a year and won the Brasileirão, the Copa Libertadores and the Supercopa!

"Respect is the feeling..." Flamengo has Tite's words echoed behind the scenes with the fans

In an interview given after the defeat of Flamengoto Peñarol, 1-0, coach Tite was direct in responding to the boos received by the fans. The statement, marked by a frank tone, exposed the coach's pragmatic vision in relation to demanding fans and the pressure for results. “I respect the fans’ feelings. Of course I feel that (the boos), I'm human”, said Tite, recognizing the fans' frustration in the face of the setback.

Tite's speech reveals that he understands the role of fans as a fundamental part in the context of a club, especially in a team of great expression like Flamengo. By mentioning that the boos affect him as a human being, the coach demonstrates empathy, but does not fail to highlight that the only way to reverse this situation is with achievements on the field. “It can only be reversed in one way”, pointed out the coach.

THE MISTAKE THAT COSTED EXTREMELY DEARLY

The response reflects the experience of Titein dealing with pressure who follows the command of great teams in Brazilian football. With successful spells at clubs such as Corinthians, Grêmio and the Brazilian national team itself, the coach has a track record that puts him in a position to understand, perhaps like few others, the relationship between performance on the field and fans' expectations. For him, this connection is clear: “Do you know how to win fans? Do you know how I won over the fans of the other clubs I played for? Win an important title”, he declared.

The phrase highlights the centrality of titles in football, especially in mass clubs like Flamengo. In Brazil, the culture of results is intense, and Tite recognizes that fans have a limited tolerance for negative results. Winning titles, for him, is the key to gaining the support of the fans, and anything other than that results in discontent: “If not, bye.”

This last part of Tite's speech summarizes the characteristic impatience of demanding fans like Flamengo. The coach makes it clear that, without obtaining relevant trophies, the relationship with the fans deteriorates quickly. The pressure is constant and is part of the daily life of those who take on the leadership of top teams. Tite seems, however, to be aware of this scenario and how it needs to be faced.

Tite's statement came after a delicate moment for Flamengo. The defeat to Peñarol, at home, in a group stage match of the Copa Libertadores, raised alarm bells for fans and the coaching staff. Flamengo had high expectations for the season, especially after major reinforcements and the arrival of Tite, a coach with wide recognition on the national and international scene.

The pressure on Flamengo is nothing new. The club, which has one of the biggest fans in the world, is known for its high expectations for titles. The expensive squad, made up of renowned players, also increases this demand. Each stumble is widely covered by the media and amplifies the dissatisfaction of part of the fans, who demand immediate results.

CAN IT GO BAD AT THE MOMENT?

The Copa Libertadores, in particular, has a important meaning for Flamengo and its fans. The continental tournament is seen as one of the club's main objectives each season. Any result other than victory can generate dissatisfaction and pressure on the technical committee, as occurred after the setback against Peñarol.

In this context, Tite's speech not only recognizes the fans' dissatisfaction, but also is realistic in relation to what is expected from a club like Flamengo. The demand for titles is part of the package when taking over a club of this size, and the coach seems to be aware of this when he points out that he will only be able to win the support of the fans with significant victories.

On Wednesday night (20), Flamengo was tied 1-1 with Goiás. The match was valid for the 24th round of the Brazilian Championship. This is not the first time that Rubro Negro has disappointed its fans this season. After the match, coach Jorge Sampaoli explained the team's difficulties.

The coach held a press conference after the end of the match and said that the Rubro Negra team has difficulty making the last pass and dealing with the absence from Arrascaeta. Sampaoli also said that the Uruguayan star is the one who has the most capacity to find the plays.

"The team doesn't make the last pass. And they have a lot of advantage in that space to make that last pass. The team is failing there, in assisting. So the center forward is a little isolated from the game. This is a conclusion that Arrascaeta is the one who has the most capacity for this and he isn't. Individually the team misses him", said Jorge Sampaoli.

It's worth remembering that Arrascaeta is still treating an injury he suffered in the biceps femoris of his right thigh. Flamengo is racing against time to have the player next Sunday (24) in the match against São Paulo. It is possible that the Uruguayan star will not be 100% ready for the match.

After giving the fans yet another disappointment, the Rubro Negro squad will perform again at CT Ninho do Urubu this Thursday morning (21) to start preparations for the second leg of the Copa do Brasil grand final. The game will be next Sunday (24), at 4pm, at Morumbi Stadium.
