Jorge Sampaoli has an impressive characteristic about his management of Flamengo: in 32 games, the coach has not repeated a single lineup. However, that same creativity in the distribution of players on the field does not exist when it comes to the names called up as starters. The Uruguayan has reduced the number of players used throughout the season when compared to what other coaches reveal.

Sampaoli has used 29 athletes since his arrival at Flamengo. Of these, 16 have more than 1000 minutes on the field. The information collected, organized and released by 'GE' indicates that the 5 players with the longest service at the club are Fabrício Bruno, Wesley, Gerson, Matheus Cunha and Ayrton Lucas.

A name that stands out due to the minutes in the last month is Luíz Araújo. The playmaker was hired only in May, for 9 million euros (R$ 48 million at the exchange rate at the time). He was only able to start reinforcing Sampaoli's squad in July and since then he has appeared in 10 games. In total he only has 322 minutes, but that's a lot for someone so new to the team.

Another more recent name is Allan. The midfielder joined the team alongside Luiz Araújo and already has 10 matches with the red-black shirt. He has even more time on the field, with 578 minutes and with many more opportunities to enter the field already in the starting lineup. With a good ball output and great combativeness, it is expected that he will have even more space as a constant in the squad.

As for those who don't have much space in recent times, we should mention Everton Cebolinha, Pedro and Santos. Everton has been losing more space lately, in the last three games Mengão has not left the bench, although in the match against Cuiabá, for example, the coach used a lineup mostly from the reserve.

Pedro is the team's top scorer in the 2023 season, but that doesn't stop him from starting to lose his starting spot since June, when Bruno Henrique returned physically recovered and started scoring a series of goals. In addition, one should not forget about the case of aggression that the striker suffered at the end of July. In the next game of the event he was suspended, for missing a training session.

Goalkeeper Santos, the starter at the beginning of Sampaoli's work, lost his spot to Matheus Cunha in May.

It should be mentioned three players who almost did not play for the coach, which led to his departure in the second half of the year. This was the case of Vidal, Marinho and Matheus Gonçalves. The Chilean left for Athletico-PR in July, already uncomfortable with the treatment he received at the end of his time at Flamengo. He even called Sampaoli a "loser" in one of his first interviews at the new club.

Marinho complicated his own life at the club when he refused to travel to the game with Ñublense in Chile, but apologized to the Argentine in a post made after leaving Rubro-Negro. Already the jewel of the base, Matheus, had been having chances with Vitor Pereira, but almost did not play with Sampaoli. Bragantino signed him on loan, and the boy has started to break free.

And the name Rodrigo Caio cannot be overlooked. He who was a very important figure in the last four years of glory at the club is being left aside in this new stage, mainly due to the large number of injuries suffered.

Several Uruguayan newspapers covered the tie between Flamengo and Vasco this Sunday (15). Among the main vehicles, “El País” and “Montevidéu Portal” highlighted that Luiz Araújo left the classic with a possible knee injury and could be absent for Rubro-Negro in the first game of the Libertadores quarter-finals against Peñarol, next Thursday (19).

Luiz Araújo played just 18 minutes in the classic. The attacker felt his knee after a challenge with a Vasco defender and even tried to continue on the field, but ended up being replaced by Arrascaeta. At half-time, Flamengo issued a statement informing that the player will be re-evaluated by the medical department at Ninho do Urubu. The squad will be presented again this Monday afternoon (16).

Uruguayan newspapers consider the possible absence of Luiz Araújo a big problem for Mengão. The athlete is a starter in Tite's team, with the most matches for Flamengo this season (50) and leader in assists (10).

The newspaper 'El País' classified the player as a key player for the team: “The injury to Luiz Araújo, one of the most important players in Mengão's squad, expands the list of injured players just a few days before the clash against Peñarol in the Copa Libertadores.”

The 'Montevideo Portal' followed the same line, highlighting the importance of the striker: “In addition to the result, another bad news for Peñarol's next rival in the Copa Libertadores it was the departure of Luiz Araújo. The fast right-winger, starter for Flamengo, felt pain in his right knee after a blow.”

Currently, Flamengo's medical department has five injured players: De La Cruz, Michael, Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro, with the trio formed by Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro only expected to return in 2025.

Expectations for De La Cruz in the game against Peñarol

While awaiting Luiz Araújo's diagnosis, coach Tite revealed, after the draw against Vasco, that he hopes to count on De La Cruz for the duel against Peñarol . According to the coach, the Uruguayan's presence could improve the effectiveness of the team, which has shown good performance in recent matches.

“In training, when he (De la Cruz) was leaving, I asked 'is there enough for 20? minutes?'. He smiled, because he couldn't. The physical department definitely said they were not in a position to do so. Not even him feeling well. Especially because you have to talk to the athlete, because then there is the charge. Hopefully, and I hope that he can be there on Thursday to reproduce today's performance, with greater effectiveness”, said Tite in the post-game press conference between Flamengo x Vasco.
