This Saturday (04), Fluminense shone at Maracanã, winning the Libertadores title by beating Boca Juniors (ARG) 2-1. However, a curious and significant aspect in relation to Fluminense's success is the contrast with Flamengo in 2022. The rival achieved continental glory with revenue that represents just a third of that obtained by Flamengo in the previous year. With the Libertadores and Copa do Brasil titles, Flamengo saw its revenues exceed the impressive mark of R$1 billion, ending the year 2022 with a total of R$1,151 billion.

In contrast, Fluminense, which celebrated victory in the continental competition this year, raised a modest R$347 million, that is, around a third of the amount accumulated by Rubro-Negro in the previous season. For the 2023 season, Fluminense projected a revenue of R$365.6 million, but it is reasonable to expect this number to increase significantly thanks to the Libertadores title. However, it will still be far from reaching Flamengo's impressive revenue. The Gávea club had already surpassed the R$1 billion mark in September, which suggests the possibility of surpassing the 2022 feat.

Even with winning titles this season, Flamengo has an objective defined for 2023: guarantee a place in the 2024 Libertadores. Currently, Rubro-Negro occupies sixth place in the Brazilian Championship table, with 50 points. This means that the team needs a winning streak to guarantee its participation in the continental competition. The next opportunity for Flamengo to get back on track to victory will be on Sunday (05), when they will face Fortaleza in the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship.

The game is scheduled to start at 4pm (Brasília time) at Arena Castelão, in Ceará. Fans can count on the most red-black broadcast on the internet, provided by Coluna do Fla on YouTube. In addition, Premiere, through the pay-per-view system, will also broadcast the match live. In this scenario, the rivalry between Flamengo and Fluminense remains intense, with both clubs seeking achievements and prominence in the football scene.

While Flamengo has racked up impressive titles and revenue in recent seasons, Fluminense has proven its ability to compete at a high level with its recent victory in the Libertadores. The rivalry between the teams promises to continue attracting the attention of fans and football fans, regardless of differences in budget and resources among other nuances that surround all this general mysticism

"Respect is the feeling..." Flamengo has Tite's words echoed behind the scenes with the fans

In an interview given after the defeat of Flamengoto Peñarol, 1-0, coach Tite was direct in responding to the boos received by the fans. The statement, marked by a frank tone, exposed the coach's pragmatic vision in relation to demanding fans and the pressure for results. “I respect the fans’ feelings. Of course I feel that (the boos), I'm human”, said Tite, recognizing the fans' frustration in the face of the setback.

Tite's speech reveals that he understands the role of fans as a fundamental part in the context of a club, especially in a team of great expression like Flamengo. By mentioning that the boos affect him as a human being, the coach demonstrates empathy, but does not fail to highlight that the only way to reverse this situation is with achievements on the field. “It can only be reversed in one way”, pointed out the coach.

THE MISTAKE THAT COSTED EXTREMELY DEARLY

The response reflects the experience of Titein dealing with pressure who follows the command of great teams in Brazilian football. With successful spells at clubs such as Corinthians, Grêmio and the Brazilian national team itself, the coach has a track record that puts him in a position to understand, perhaps like few others, the relationship between performance on the field and fans' expectations. For him, this connection is clear: “Do you know how to win fans? Do you know how I won over the fans of the other clubs I played for? Win an important title”, he declared.

The phrase highlights the centrality of titles in football, especially in mass clubs like Flamengo. In Brazil, the culture of results is intense, and Tite recognizes that fans have a limited tolerance for negative results. Winning titles, for him, is the key to gaining the support of the fans, and anything other than that results in discontent: “If not, bye.”

This last part of Tite's speech summarizes the characteristic impatience of demanding fans like Flamengo. The coach makes it clear that, without obtaining relevant trophies, the relationship with the fans deteriorates quickly. The pressure is constant and is part of the daily life of those who take on the leadership of top teams. Tite seems, however, to be aware of this scenario and how it needs to be faced.

Tite's statement came after a delicate moment for Flamengo. The defeat to Peñarol, at home, in a group stage match of the Copa Libertadores, raised alarm bells for fans and the coaching staff. Flamengo had high expectations for the season, especially after major reinforcements and the arrival of Tite, a coach with wide recognition on the national and international scene.

The pressure on Flamengo is nothing new. The club, which has one of the biggest fans in the world, is known for its high expectations for titles. The expensive squad, made up of renowned players, also increases this demand. Each stumble is widely covered by the media and amplifies the dissatisfaction of part of the fans, who demand immediate results.

CAN IT GO BAD AT THE MOMENT?

The Copa Libertadores, in particular, has a important meaning for Flamengo and its fans. The continental tournament is seen as one of the club's main objectives each season. Any result other than victory can generate dissatisfaction and pressure on the technical committee, as occurred after the setback against Peñarol.

In this context, Tite's speech not only recognizes the fans' dissatisfaction, but also is realistic in relation to what is expected from a club like Flamengo. The demand for titles is part of the package when taking over a club of this size, and the coach seems to be aware of this when he points out that he will only be able to win the support of the fans with significant victories.

O Diário Olé, Argentina's main sports newspaper, reported on its social networks that the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) has already decided on the venue for the Copa Libertadores de América final. According to the publication, the game will take place at the recently renovated Monumental de Nuñez, River Plate's stadium. The entity has not yet officially commented.

The Copa Libertadores 2024 final is scheduled for November 30th, a Saturday. It will be the sixth unique final of the competition since the model was adopted in 2019. The Monumental de Nuñez has undergone extensive renovation in recent years and has become the stadium with the largest audience capacity on the South American continent. The River Plate field holds 85 thousand people.

Conmebol established the only final of its continental cups in 2019. In the case of the Libertadores, the finals were held in Lima (2019), Rio de Janeiro (2020 ), Montevideo (2021), Guayaquil (2022), Rio de Janeiro (2023). The Argentine capital has been the favorite since before the start of the current edition of the Libertadores. Conmebol announced that the Libertadores final would be in Buenos Aires, but did not say which stadium.

River Plate could play the final at home in 2024

River Plate can play the Libertadores 2024 final at home. The Buenos Aires club spent more than US$45 million to expand the stadium's capacity and modernize the facilities. The main change was the closer proximity of the public to the playing field. The renovation created new areas for fans on the sides and behind the goals.

If they reach the final, River Plate will be the first club to play the only Libertadores final in their own stadium. Fluminense was champion in 2023 at Maracanã, but the Rio tricolor is only the administrator of the public stadium.
