Flamengo's board has already carried out some tests at Maracanã to implement facial recognition for fans at the entrances. The club's objective is to try to implement the system by the end of 2023. The project was accelerated after the CBF asked the club for the stadium to be a pilot in the organization's anti-violence program and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the Ministry of Sports .
There was a meeting between representatives of the federal government and the confederation to sign a cooperation agreement to cross-reference data on fans who attend stadiums.
In this scenario, the president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, asked to the president of Flamengo, Rodolfo Landim, for the stadium to be a pilot for the implementation of the system. Landim had already been monitoring the tests carried out by the club with facial recognition when accessing the stadium, which is already done in places like Allianz Parque.
Facial recognition aims to ensure that the fan who has a name on the ticket you are actually entering the stadium. With this, the club would have two gains: 1) combating the activities of scalpers 2) the possibility of implementing an attendance criterion when purchasing tickets.
The tests began on a small scale in sectors such as Maracanã Mais, the most expensive of the sectors. It's a very gradual start because red-black leaders understand that they have a big challenge due to complexities in the system.
A first issue is that the system has to be well calibrated to work in the same way for all races. There are doubts about being more accurate in one race than the other, and the club does not want any negative repercussions.
Secondly, there is a calculation that recognition may take a few milliseconds because it is looking for the fan's face in a large database. This fraction can significantly increase the queue. And this is an access problem in a stadium where two thirds of the public enters in the last half hour before the game.
One possibility is to install recognition associated with physical entry, which would ease the barrier. Installing more turnstiles would require a very high investment. The red-black board's intention is for the system to be implemented by the end of the year. However, due to the challenges mentioned above, there is no guarantee of this schedule.
