After Flamengo's elimination in the quarter-finals of Libertadores 2024, last Thursday (27), journalist Mauro Cezar Pereira harshly criticized the performance of the team led by Tite. CRF was eliminated after a goalless draw against Peñarol, failing to reverse the defeat at Maracanã, in the first leg.

Mauro Cezar did not mince words when evaluating Mais Querido's campaign in the continental tournament, considering the "shameful" result. For him, the Rio team was unable to confirm their favoritism in the quarter-finals and Tite's work is beginning to show signs of decline.

AVERAGE PERFORMANCE NO IT'S ENOUGH

In his analysis, the journalist highlighted that, despite not classifying the coach's work as bad, he does not live up to the club's expectations. "This campaign in Libertadores is shameful. Tite's work is reasonable, but it is heading towards being considered bad", stated Mauro Cezar. He recalled that, although Mengão is still alive in other competitions, such as the Brasileirão and the Copa do Brasil, an average performance does not meet the demands of a club the size of Flamengo.

"Flamengo has the most expensive squad in South America, and this level of work is simply not enough. The team controlled the game, but was unable to finish, and that is a failure of both the coaching staff and the players", he criticized.

FOCUS ON THE BRASILEIRÃO AND CUP OF BRASIL

With the elimination in the Libertadores, Rubro-Negro turns its attention to the competitions national. Mengão is in fourth place in the Brazilian Championship and is looking to secure a place in the next edition of the Libertadores. Furthermore, the team continues to compete in the Copa do Brasil, where they will face Corinthians in the semi-final, with the hope of winning another title this season.

Flamengo faces a major challenge in the offensive sector after the serious injury of top scorer Pedro, which will miss the team for the remainder of the season. Tite, responsible for assembling the squad, has been struggling to find an efficient solution that fills the gap left by the attacker. The coach has chosen to use Bruno Henrique as a center forward, but the strategy has not yet brought the expected results.

Gabigol and Carlinhos, other options available in the squad, have been used less, with both spending more time on the bench of reserves than on the field. This situation is directly reflected in the team's offensive performance, which has not been able to maintain the same efficiency it had with Pedro on the field.

DIFFICULTIES IN THE ATTACK WITHOUT PEDRO

Pedro's absence has been a big blow for Mais Querido, who depended on the striker to lead the offensive sector. In the 2024 season, number nine had already scored 30 goals, while the other three players in the position only scored 14 goals throughout the year. The situation is worsened by other absences, such as Cebolinha, out of action for the remainder of the year, and Luiz Araújo, who is recovering from arthroscopy.

Tite recognizes that the team was assembled around the Pedro's style of play, which makes adapting to a new formation even more complicated. "There was a lack of precision in the final moments, in the moments of definition to transform the volume of play into goals. The team was structured to play around Pedro, a player in the area, with presence and ability to retain the ball and use the aerial game" , said the coach.

ALTERNATIVES TESTED BY TITE

Without Pedro, the coach of Flamengohas been testing different alternatives, but so far without success. Bruno Henrique was placed in the center forward role, while Gabigol and Carlinhos failed to convince in the opportunities they had. "We tried with Bruno Henrique, Gabi, Carlinhos, but we didn't get the expected final result. This offensive structure was lost a little", concluded Tite.

Flamengo, who disappointed their fans last Thursday (26) by being eliminated from the Libertadores da América 2024, is now back training at Ninho do Urubu. Without the right to take a day off on Friday (27), the squad returned to Rio de Janeiro and reappeared at 3pm, with the start of activities aimed at the next commitment in the Brazilian Championship.

The team led by Tite now needs " turn the key" and focus their attention on the two remaining competitions: the Brasileirão and the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil. The initial focus will be the duel against Athletico-PR, which takes place next Sunday (29), at 8pm, at Maracanã, for the 28th round of the Brazilian Championship.

PREPARATION FOR THE BRASILEIRÃO

The clash against Athletico-PR will be crucial for Mais Querido, which seeks to consolidate its position among the top four in the table and guarantee a direct place in the next edition of the Libertadores. The technical committee has already indicated that it intends to use maximum force in the confrontation, as the team needs to recover important points in the final stretch of the competition.

In addition, Rubro-Negro also maintains expectations for the semi-final of the World Cup of Brazil, where they face Corinthians. With the early elimination in the Libertadores, Mengão sees the national tournament as an opportunity to close the season with an impressive title.

ELIMINATION IN THE LIBERTADORES

Flamengo even tried, but failed to break through Peñarol's defense in the second leg of the Libertadores quarter-finals. The Rio team dominated possession of the ball, 74% of the time, and made 13 shots, but none of them resulted in a goal. In this way, Peñarol secured its classification with an aggregate score of 1-0, after winning the first game at Maracanã.

Despite the pressure and volume of play presented in Uruguay, CRF was unable to transform their chances at goals, ending the match without being able to take the decision to penalties. The elimination leaves a bitter taste for the red and black fans, who expected a better performance from the team in the continental competition.
