A champion of important titles with Flamengo , midfielder Willian Arão is back in Brazilian football . At 33 years old, the player was announced as the new reinforcement for Santos, with Neymar, for the rest of the season. According to the 'GE' portal, Arão signed a contract until the end of 2026, with an automatic renewal clause for another year, allowing him to remain at Vila Belmiro until the end of 2027.
The player had offers from the United States and the United Arab Emirates, but chose to return to the country to wear the Peixe shirt . Before signing, Arão underwent medical examinations and was approved by the Santos medical department. He will officially present himself this Tuesday (01), at CT Rei Pelé.
Since leaving Flamengo in 2022, Willian Arão has played for three seasons in European football. He played for Fenerbahçe (TUR) and Panathinaikos (GRE), winning the Turkish Cup and the Greek Cup, in addition to playing 100 matches on the continent . In recent months, however, he has lost space with the arrival of coach Rui Vitória at the Greek club.
The contract with Panathinaikos ended last Monday (30), and Santos took the opportunity to sign the midfielder without transfer costs . Flamengo , in turn, showed no interest in repatriating him.
Arão could be back with Flamengo very soon. That's because the duel between Santos and Mengão is scheduled for July 16th, for the Brasileirão . It will be the first match for the Rubro-Negro after the Club World Cup and could mark the midfielder's debut wearing the Santos jersey — precisely against the team where he became an idol.
For Flamengo, Willian Arão lived the peak of his career . He won two Libertadores (2019 and 2022), two Brazilian Championships, one Brazilian Cup, one South American Recopa, two Brazilian Super Cups and four Carioca Championship titles. In total, he played 377 games wearing the Sacred Mantle.

Conmebol announced, on Friday night (19), the refereeing scale for the duel between Flamengo and Estudiantes (ARG), valid for the return of the quarterfinals of the Libertadores . The person responsible for the whistle will be the Chilean Piero Maza, who will command the match in La Plata.
The referee is familiar to Argentines: in the round of 16, he officiated the first leg between Estudiantes and Cerro Porteño (PAR), in which he awarded a controversial penalty in stoppage time. In the 47th minute of the second half, Maza signaled a foul on Guido Castillo , which Santiago Ascacíbar converted, securing a 1-0 away victory. In the return leg, in Argentina, the score ended 0-0, eliminating the Paraguayans.
Cerro coach on Estudiantes vs Flamengo referee: "I didn't think several of his decisions were correct"
After the match, coach Diego Martínez criticized Maza's performance: " I didn't like the refereeing, but I understand that he's human and can make mistakes, just like me, when making decisions . I didn't think several of his decisions were correct. He has a team that supports him, and I disagreed with those decisions," the coach stated.
The Paraguayan press also covered the incident. The Altos Noticias website called it the "biggest robbery in the history of the Libertadores ," highlighting that it was a "made-up penalty, not even the Estudiantes players complained."
The referee has already refereed three Flamengo games in history:
The decisive Libertadores quarterfinal clash between Estudiantes and Flamengo takes place on Thursday (25), in La Plata, starting at 9:30 pm (Brasília time). The match will be broadcast on ESPN (pay TV) and Disney+ (streaming) .
