Midfielder Erick Pulgar was one of the highlights of Flamengo's 1-0 victory over Bahia, last Saturday (30) at Maracanã, in the 25th round of the Brazilian Championship. In an interview this Tuesday (03) for FlaTv, the player who drew attention for having hit two free kicks against the post in the match, revealed how he became a penalty taker and who was his inspiration.

“I always liked taking shots free kicks. I'm tall, normally tall people will head the corner, but I also like taking corners. So I prefer to take free kicks, corners, rather than jumping to head the ball. This characteristic of free kicks, I had at Bologna opportunity and pleasure to be managed by Sinisa Mihajlovic, may he rest in peace. He was a great free kick taker", said the midfielder.

Mihajlovic was born in the former Yugoslavia in 1969, in what is now the region of Croatia. He was a star for his country's national team and in Italian football, where he played for Roma, Sampdoria, Inter and Lazio. Even though he was a defender, he scored 38 goals for these clubs, 28 of which were free kicks. He died in December 2022, after years of battling leukemia. But before that he coached Erick Pulgar at Bologna in 2019.

"The difference to Europe is that we only played on Sundays, we had more preparation time, and Professor Sinisa twice a week was 45 minutes, once time for free kicks, corners, penalties... I think that's what gave me that power", said Erick.

Erick Pulgar scored free kicks for Bologna and Fiorentina, and now he's trying to take over the role as a collector also at Flamengo. Despite the first free kick hitting the post twice in the match against Bahia, the midfielder was not discouraged and said he will try more times.

"I'm going to keep working. As I say, time here, match by match, every three days, it's a little difficult to train for an hour. But if we try 20 minutes, four kicks, let all four be goals (laughs). Let's keep working to score that goal", said the midfielder in an interview with FlaTv.

The press is disgusting, the only thing it does is ruin the team”, commented the midfielder who played for Flamengo.
