Last Saturday (10), Flamengo faced Volta Redonda, in a delayed match valid for the third round of Carioca. Mais Querido won 3-0. However, the Maracanã pitch once again became the subject of debate and criticism from coaches and players. In addition to Tite, the coach of the opposing team, detonated the quality of the grass.

"Very lively ball, bouncing a lot, a very tough field. Raulino (de Oliveira), for sure, is much better. The spectacle could be much better if the pitch helped both teams. So, my constructive criticism is that a very high investment by the teams, beautiful football, needs a better stage", said Felipe, coach of Volta Redonda.

"Maracanã left to be desired because the field is really very hard. From afar, you don't end up seeing it, but close to the players, you see that the ball bounces. During the penalty shootout, my player controlled it wrong, but the ball was very live, so This really harms the show", concluded coach Felipe.

CRITICISM OF MATHEUS CUNHA and TITE

The Volta Redonda coach was not the only one to criticize the Maracanã pitch. After the match, Matheus Cunha gave an interview and spoke about the quality of the pitch. He said that this harms the game and made harsh demands on Flamengo's board.

Tite also spoke about the state of the stadium's grass. In a press conference, the coach said it was unacceptable: "It is unacceptable for Maracanã to have this pitch. I don't know who is responsible, I'm talking about the diagnosis. It's unacceptable... The penalty for Flamengo happened because the pitch hurt the Volta Redonda player and gave penalty. It has to be for everyone. You can't have a field like that. It's not possible", said coach Tite.

NEXT MATCH

With the Maracanã pitch in a precarious state, Flamengo will not play the next round at the stadium. Thus, Mais Querido travels to Aracaju to face Bangu, next Thursday (15), at 9:30 pm.

Speculated as a possible reinforcement of Flamengo to fill the gap left by Pedro, striker Anthony Martial is free on the market, but has not played since December 9, 2023. On that occasion, Manchester United, his former club, entered the field to face Bournemouth and lost 3-0 in the Premier League. Martial was a starter and played for 56 minutes.

At the beginning of the year, the French striker suffered a groin injury that required surgery. Therefore, he was away for around 42 days, only returning in March. Even though there were three months left on his contract, Manchester United chose to let go of the player. Since then, Martial has been evaluating his next club and Flamengo is paying attention to his movements.

Just like Flamengo, Anthony Martial suffered from injuries in 2023/24. The star had several physical problems that kept him away from the field for a total of 60 days. Due to muscle pain, the player was not available for United in 12 matches last season.

Status of the deal between Flamengo and Anthony Martial

If the If Flamengo is really interested in the Frenchman, they will have to race against time and agree on the signing by Monday (9). Registration for free players is closing. According to Italian journalist Luca Bendoni, who works at the Gianluca Dimarzio portal, the deal could come to fruition soon.

Offered to Flamengo by his staff, Martial also had a drop in his personal numbers. In the 2022/23 season, the player scored six goals and provided two assists in the Premier League. In 2023/24, it was just one goal and no pass that resulted in the ball in the opponents' net.

After suffering a serious injury to his left knee, Flamengo striker Pedro is out of the 2024 season and only should return to the pitch in 2025. With the absence of number 9, Flamengo's board decided not to make major investments in the transfer market and opted to look for solutions within the squad itself. The main name chosen to replace Pedro is Gabigol, the club's idol, despite being in a less prestigious phase.

Even though he is experiencing a moment of lesser protagonism, Gabigol is seen as the main option to take the place of Pedro. Pedro. With decisive goals in the 2019, 2021 and 2022 Libertadores finals, Gabigol is still a reference for the red and black attack. The curious thing is that all the goals scored by Flamengo in the last three finals of the continental tournament went to number 99, consolidating his historical importance at the club.

Despite this, the striker lost space in the current season under coach Tite's command. So far, Gabigol has started just three matches, scoring four goals and one assist. However, he appeared in 21 games, which indicates his constant presence in the coach's options.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR THE RUBRO-NEGRO ATTACK

In addition to Gabigol, Flamengo has Bruno Henrique, who has already played as a center forward, and Carlinhos, a young promise from the base, as alternatives to make up for Pedro's absence. The club's bet is not to do "financial madness", focusing on making the most of the players who are already part of the squad.

NEXT CHALLENGE: FLAMENGO X BAHIA FOR THE BRAZILIAN CUP

Without Pedro, Flamengo returns to the field on September 12th to face Bahia, in a match valid for the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Cup. Rubro-Negro has the advantage of the first clash, having won 1-0 at Arena Fonte Nova. Now, the team only needs a draw at Maracanã to guarantee their place in the tournament's semi-finals.
