The change to the Campeonato Carioca regulations announced by the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation (Ferj) on Wednesday morning had a positive impact on Flamengo's board of directors and technical committee.
The new format of the competition, which in 2026 will have 10 dates and a single-game final, was defined in a meeting at the Federation's headquarters and was attended by the red-black president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap.
“The calendar will be reduced from 16 to 10 dates, which will make the championship much more interesting. This has been an aspiration of the Rio teams for some time and the president (of Ferj ), Rubens Lopes, was sensitive to this. The CBF was also happy with this decision to reduce the dates, which is in line with the clubs’ wishes. I think it will continue to be the most charming championship in the country and will be more exciting without a shadow of a doubt,” said Bap.
Technical director José Boto congratulated the Federation for the measure that aims to improve the quality of the show: “It will make the Campeonato Carioca even more attractive and I hope that everyone follows this wave of Ferj, and that this extends to the Campeonato Brasileiro , because it will greatly improve the quality of football in Brazil” .
According to the director, the calendar is what separates Brazilian football from the major leagues, which makes changing the regulations even more important at this time. “Long before coming to Brazil, I already considered Brazilian football to be an extremely attractive product, which, when sold well, was in no way inferior to the Premier League or other European leagues, but after arriving here I realized that the calendar was something that distanced it from consistent quality in the games” , pointed out José Boto.
Coach Filipe Luís thanked the Federation for reducing the dates and highlighted the importance that Rubro-Negro, current champion, gives to the tournament: “In addition to being important games for the club, they are games that are very mentally draining, because most of them are classics and all teams go there to win, effort is never negotiable”.
Furthermore, the coach also believes that this change tends to improve the physical condition of the squad for the rest of the season. “When the Carioca ends, there is the feeling that many more months have passed than actually happened. In fact, when you add this to the time of year that is summer, this update to the calendar is extremely important so that we can arrive in better shape at the start of the championships” , stated Filipe.
The Campeonato Carioca will have two groups with six clubs each. In the first phase, the teams from Group A will face their opponents from Group B and the four best-placed teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals of the competition. In the quarterfinals, the matches will be played between clubs from the same group. In the semifinals, the matches will be drawn.
Mengão signed the players for R$133 million and strengthens Filipe Luís's squad, while Rizek evaluates the performance of Mais Querido's reinforcements

Flamengo made four signings in the last transfer window for Filipe Luís' squad: Saúl Ñíguez, Samuel Lino, Emerson Royal, and Jorge Carrascal . After the transfer window closed, journalist André Rizek of Grupo Globo assessed the signings and noted that some players still need to adapt to meet the Rio de Janeiro club's expectations.
" I think the technical aspects of Jorginho, Saúl, and Samu Lino are impressive. I think Emerson Royal and Carrascal are a step below, and they're options to rotate the squad ," Rizek commented in a video posted on social media. According to him, while some new signings are already showing satisfactory performance, others are still adapting to the Mais Querido's style and rhythm.
With Wesley's departure to Roma (ITA), Mengão went to the transfer market and signed Emerson Royal, formerly of Milan, for nine million euros (approximately R$57 million). Jorge Carrascal was acquired from Dynamo Moscow (RUS) for 12 million euros (approximately R$76 million). In total, the Rio de Janeiro club invested R$133 million in these two signings alone.
So far, Emerson Royal has played in five matches for Flamengo, without scoring or providing assists. Jorge Carrascal continues to adapt to the club 's routine and has yet to start, having appeared in three games so far.
Flamengo's next match will be on September 14th, against Juventude, at 4 pm, at Alfredo Jaconi Stadium, in the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship. New signings Emerson Royal and Jorge Carrascal will be available to coach Filipe Luís for the match.
The classic promises a full house and great expectations from the Mengão fans, who are looking to maintain their lead in the Brasileirão against their traditional rival from Rio de Janeiro.
