The change to the Campeonato Carioca regulations announced by the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation (Ferj) on Wednesday morning had a positive impact on Flamengo's board of directors and technical committee.

FLA BOARD APPROVES THE MODEL

The new format of the competition, which in 2026 will have 10 dates and a single-game final, was defined in a meeting at the Federation's headquarters and was attended by the red-black president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap.

“The calendar will be reduced from 16 to 10 dates, which will make the championship much more interesting. This has been an aspiration of the Rio teams for some time and the president (of Ferj ), Rubens Lopes, was sensitive to this. The CBF was also happy with this decision to reduce the dates, which is in line with the clubs’ wishes. I think it will continue to be the most charming championship in the country and will be more exciting without a shadow of a doubt,” said Bap.

Technical director José Boto congratulated the Federation for the measure that aims to improve the quality of the show: “It will make the Campeonato Carioca even more attractive and I hope that everyone follows this wave of Ferj, and that this extends to the Campeonato Brasileiro , because it will greatly improve the quality of football in Brazil” .

According to the director, the calendar is what separates Brazilian football from the major leagues, which makes changing the regulations even more important at this time. “Long before coming to Brazil, I already considered Brazilian football to be an extremely attractive product, which, when sold well, was in no way inferior to the Premier League or other European leagues, but after arriving here I realized that the calendar was something that distanced it from consistent quality in the games” , pointed out José Boto.

Coach Filipe Luís thanked the Federation for reducing the dates and highlighted the importance that Rubro-Negro, current champion, gives to the tournament: “In addition to being important games for the club, they are games that are very mentally draining, because most of them are classics and all teams go there to win, effort is never negotiable”.

Furthermore, the coach also believes that this change tends to improve the physical condition of the squad for the rest of the season. “When the Carioca ends, there is the feeling that many more months have passed than actually happened. In fact, when you add this to the time of year that is summer, this update to the calendar is extremely important so that we can arrive in better shape at the start of the championships” , stated Filipe.

NEW FORMAT

The Campeonato Carioca will have two groups with six clubs each. In the first phase, the teams from Group A will face their opponents from Group B and the four best-placed teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals of the competition. In the quarterfinals, the matches will be played between clubs from the same group. In the semifinals, the matches will be drawn.

Flamengo, through a preliminary injunction in Rio de Janeiro, managed to block R$77 million in the broadcast rights contract between Libra and TV Globo. The measure generated strong dissatisfaction among other clubs in the bloc, especially Palmeiras, which released an official statement harshly criticizing the club's stance .

OFFICIAL NOTE FROM PALMEIRAS

In a statement, the São Paulo club called the action "predatory and vile," accusing Flamengo of attempting to "financially suffocate" the other Libra members. The statement also recalled previous incidents, such as the club's current management's refusal to sign a manifesto against racism promoted by the organization earlier this year.

According to Palmeiras , although it could benefit financially from changes in revenue sharing, the club advocates for the search for collective and sustainable solutions for Brazilian football and hopes that the courts will recognize Flamengo's intentions in filing the injunction.

CASE CONTEXT

Flamengo's board believes that the current distribution model is unfair, as it does not proportionally consider the weight of the red-black fans , who, according to the club, are responsible for the majority of television audiences in the country.

With this measure, Flamengo managed to block R$77 million relating to the Libra TV contract — an amount that involves all participating clubs: São Paulo, Palmeiras, Santos, Bahia, Grêmio, Vitória, Atlético-MG and Red Bull Bragantino .

LIBRA POSITION

Libra also officially issued a statement condemning the decision, stating that the action " erodes the group's harmony by questioning already agreed upon agreements ." The organization emphasized that the division model was approved at a meeting with consensus among members.

FLAMENGO'S RESPONSE

In a statement, Flamengo defended its position, stating that:

  • He always sought amicable solutions and accepted concessions;
  • The current division, which guarantees only 20.41% of audience revenue, is illegal, since the red-black fans represent 47% of Libra's total fans;
  • The current model generates an estimated loss of R$100 million per year , representing 37% less compared to the previous contract;
  • The legal action aims to correct distortions, and not to suffocate the other clubs, highlighting that only 30% of the audience share is blocked , while the other 70% continues to be passed on normally.

The club concluded by reinforcing that its fight is for compliance with the Libra Statute, for the valorization of the representation of each institution and for fairer and more balanced criteria in the division of broadcast revenues.
