Flamengo U20 will have another challenge in the Brazilian Championship in the category. The Garotos do Ninho face Palmeiras in the 3rd round of the competition, this Wednesday (17), at 3:15 pm in Gávea, broadcast on SporTV. It will be the reunion of the opponents from the single final of the last edition of the Brasileirão, with Mengão becoming two-time champions.

From the starting lineup of the last match between the teams, only ten athletes were listed for this Wednesday. Another generation, made up mostly of players born in 2005 and 2006, but who already show on the field what it means to be Flamengo. Race, love and passion were part of the journey of these Boys from the Nest, who went to the semi-final of the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior in January and, in March, lifted and brought the unprecedented Copa Libertadores Sub-20, which could be played by cause of the Brazilian title in 2023.

Always reaching the finals and competing for the main achievements are part of the process of forming Flamengo's grassroots football. It's in the Rubro-Negro DNA and the athletes know it. Whether from Under-20A or Under-20B, created in 2019. Two teams in the same category, with their own technical committees that work in an integrated manner to meet the needs of category competitions and professional football. Furthermore, it helps with the transition and adaptation of the boys recently promoted from U17.

It was because they went through 20B, for example, that the competitive level was maintained even with the changes in the current U17 squad. 20, which had athletes moving up to the professional ranks, being traded or exceeding the age category. Technique and skill spoke louder, the backbone formed in the Copinha and subsequently, the Libertadores won. Today, 20B is led by Raphael Bahia, and is competing in the Copa Rio while, at the same time, Mario Jorge leads the U20 in the Brasileirão.

Last Sunday (14), the 1-0 away victory over Fluminense, qualifying for the cup final, proves this. The opponent played with the main team made up of 2004 and 2005 athletes, while Mengão had a younger team, and they were just as competitive, dueling at the same level of physical intensity and creating many goal chances. Mario Jorge knows he can count on them throughout the season, which has a full calendar (after Copinha and Libertadores, the category still has Brasileirão, Copa Rio, Mundial, Carioca and Copa do Brasil in dispute)

Current champion of the Libertadores sub-20 and Brazilian Championship of the category, coach Mário Jorge prepares the Mais Querido to debut in the new edition of the national tournament. The commander gave an interview to GE and took the pressure off the group to win the third championship. He also values the work done at the base, since even with the frequent entry and exit of athletes, he manages to keep the team fighting for titles.

“Zero weight for us. We have to be very careful about what we are going to deliver. In recent years we have been showing this. We have a lot of changes in the cast. Many athletes have been promoted to the professional ranks, others are also traded, and we continue to deliver impressive results in the category, see these last few years. In these six years we reached at least the semi-final of the Brazilian Championship, but then there is also the final of the Copa do Brasil, the final of the State Championship, Brazilian titles, and now the Libertadores title. And even so, Flamengo's base continues to place athletes in the professional ranks with a very aligned training process”, he explains, before adding:

“We continue to deliver a very competitive team in the under-20s and that is what we believe. That's what we're going to continue thinking about doing. In other words, zero weight of pressure for us in the competition, we know our responsibility”, comments Mário Jorge.

MÁRIO JORGE COMMENTS ON FLAMENGO’S PREPARATION FOR THE DEBUT IN THE BRAZILIANO

“Our preparation was good, we returned from the Libertadores on March 18th and managed to recover some players who were very worn out from there. Unfortunately we lost Caio (Garcia) due to a muscle injury. But we promote some players, we have new athletes arriving, players that we recruited in the Copa São Paulo, players that our recruitment department also brought into the club”, he says.
