Last Wednesday (10), Vasco da Gama officially announced the signing of Philippe Coutinho. The player arrives at the club on a one-year loan, coming from Aston Villa, in England, which holds his economic rights. The signing of Coutinho, 32, marks a significant return to Brazilian football, after a long international career. The announcement was received with great enthusiasm by Vasco fans.

A detail that draws attention to Coutinho's contract is the "anti-Flamengo" clause. Concerned about the possibility of losing the player to their biggest rival, Vasco inserted a specific fine into the agreement. If Flamengo tries to sign Coutinho during the loan period, they will have to pay a fine of R$100 million. The measure was revealed by the Globo Esporte website, generating debates in the sporting scene.

In the past, Flamengo showed interest in Philippe Coutinho, but there have been no recent negotiations between the club and player. Coutinho has always prioritized a return to Vasco, the club where he began his professional career. The midfielder reinforced this decision by opting for the Cruz-Maltino team, despite the various opportunities he had in Europe and other international markets. The clause in the contract guarantees greater peace of mind for Vasco regarding the player's permanence.

Philippe Coutinho began his career at Vasco before being acquired by Inter Milan in July 2010. Throughout his career in Europe, he wore the shirts of renowned clubs such as Espanyol, Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Aston Villa. Coutinho accumulated several experiences and titles, consolidating himself as one of the best-known Brazilian talents in international football.

Before returning to Brazil, Coutinho had a spell at Al -Duhail, from Qatar, where he stood out last season. He scored eight goals and provided three assists in 23 appearances for the Qatari club. Now, back at Vasco, the expectation is that the midfielder can contribute significantly to the Cruz-Maltino team's campaign, bringing his vast experience and skill to help the club achieve its goals.

Several Uruguayan newspapers covered the tie between Flamengo and Vasco this Sunday (15). Among the main vehicles, “El País” and “Montevidéu Portal” highlighted that Luiz Araújo left the classic with a possible knee injury and could be absent for Rubro-Negro in the first game of the Libertadores quarter-finals against Peñarol, next Thursday (19).

Luiz Araújo played just 18 minutes in the classic. The attacker felt his knee after a challenge with a Vasco defender and even tried to continue on the field, but ended up being replaced by Arrascaeta. At half-time, Flamengo issued a statement informing that the player will be re-evaluated by the medical department at Ninho do Urubu. The squad will be presented again this Monday afternoon (16).

Uruguayan newspapers consider the possible absence of Luiz Araújo a big problem for Mengão. The athlete is a starter in Tite's team, with the most matches for Flamengo this season (50) and leader in assists (10).

The newspaper 'El País' classified the player as a key player for the team: “The injury to Luiz Araújo, one of the most important players in Mengão's squad, expands the list of injured players just a few days before the clash against Peñarol in the Copa Libertadores.”

The 'Montevideo Portal' followed the same line, highlighting the importance of the striker: “In addition to the result, another bad news for Peñarol's next rival in the Copa Libertadores it was the departure of Luiz Araújo. The fast right-winger, starter for Flamengo, felt pain in his right knee after a blow.”

Currently, Flamengo's medical department has five injured players: De La Cruz, Michael, Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro, with the trio formed by Cebolinha, Viña and Pedro only expected to return in 2025.

Expectations for De La Cruz in the game against Peñarol

While awaiting Luiz Araújo's diagnosis, coach Tite revealed, after the draw against Vasco, that he hopes to count on De La Cruz for the duel against Peñarol . According to the coach, the Uruguayan's presence could improve the effectiveness of the team, which has shown good performance in recent matches.

“In training, when he (De la Cruz) was leaving, I asked 'is there enough for 20? minutes?'. He smiled, because he couldn't. The physical department definitely said they were not in a position to do so. Not even him feeling well. Especially because you have to talk to the athlete, because then there is the charge. Hopefully, and I hope that he can be there on Thursday to reproduce today's performance, with greater effectiveness”, said Tite in the post-game press conference between Flamengo x Vasco.

Flamengo and Vasco face each other this Sunday, at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã, in the Rio classic valid for the 26th round of the Brasileirão. The clash will mark the reunion between coach Tite, from Rubro-Negro, and Philippe Coutinho, from Cruzmaltino, years after their partnership in the Brazilian National Team, where they experienced moments of success and also frustration.

Sub Under Tite's command, Coutinho enjoyed the peak of his career with the Seleção, standing out in the 2018 World Cup, when he scored two goals and provided two assists in five games. Furthermore, he was a key player in winning the 2019 Copa América, taking advantage of Neymar's absence due to injury. This was Tite's only title as head of the national team.

Coutinho played 68 games for the Brazilian national team, 51 of them under the command of Tite, who is a great admirer of the 32-year-old midfielder. During the period, Coutinho scored 17 goals, becoming the third highest scorer of the Tite era, behind only Neymar and Gabriel Jesus. He also contributed six assists.

One of the most memorable moments of the partnership between the two came in November 2016, when Coutinho made a beautiful move and opened the scoring in the 3-0 victory over Argentina, at Mineirão, impressing Tite and consolidating his position in the team.

Return after a month away

Philippe Coutinho is coach Rafael Paiva's main addition for this Sunday's classic. The player returns after a month away for physical reconditioning, a period in which he was also affected by Covid-19. His last appearance was in the draw with Bragantino, on August 3, when he came on in the second half.

Since returning to Vasco, Coutinho has participated in just four games, being a starter on two occasions, accumulating 94 minutes in the field. During training, he suffered a muscle injury to his left thigh, which sidelined him.
