According to Ge, Flamengo's 2024 presidential election, which takes place amid weeks of scorching heat, recently gained prominence on a memorable night this Monday. Two emblematic characters of the club, Márcio Braga and Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, met to discuss a subject of great relevance: the launch of an opposition ticket against the current president, Rodolfo Landim.

Interestingly, Bandeira, who had recently declared that he had no intention of participating in the next election, had a notable change in position. Now, not only is he willing to run, but he has also become the favorite to represent the group that aims to defeat Landim. Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, who presided over Flamengo from 2013 to 2018, joined the club alongside Wallim Vasconcellos and Rodolfo Landim, who were the candidates for president and vice-general in the 2012 elections. , due to the lack of an uninterrupted association history of five years, their ticket was challenged, and Bandeira and Walter D'Agostino became the representatives of Chapa Azul - Flamengo World Champion. In recent months, Bandeira had been reiterating his non-intention of running for president, causing the name of Flávio Willeman, legal vice-president of the club between 2012 and 2018, to emerge as a strong candidate to represent the opposition group.< /p>

However, on the 14th, a vote on an amendment to the statute that prohibited the participation of people with elected positions in public entities in Flamengo's presidential elections caused an impasse in the Deliberative Council. This measure would directly affect Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, who is a federal deputy for the PSB. A week later, the president of CoDe, Antônio Alcides, declared the end of the session.

While Bandeira and his supporters claim that the amendment had been disapproved by the majority of those present, the former president considered suspending the vote as a "coup". Márcio Braga, who previously supported Landim, at age 87, is now on Bandeira's side in the election scheduled for December 2024, but which has been in full swing for a long time at the Gávea facilities. This election promises to be one of the most memorable events in Flamengo's recent history.

"The time has come to say goodbye. Or even a see you soon to football . It's time to turn to the other side of life, pay more attention to my children, and return to being a full-time father and husband. The time has come to hang up my boots," he declared in an interview with GE.

FAMILY IN THE FOREGROUND

Now, the former player intends to dedicate more time to his wife, Fernanda, and his sons, Romeu, seven, and Mateo, two. The decision was motivated not only by the natural physical limitations of his age , but mainly by the desire to be more present in his family's life.

"It's really hard to actually say, 'I'm going to stop.' For 31 years, that's all I did. Since I was six years old, I've always been playing. I thought it would be easy, but it wasn't. What weighed most heavily was the desire to be closer to my family," he said.

A CAREER MARKED BY FLAMENGO AND SUCCESS

Discovered in 2005, Renato Augusto wore the Sacred Mantle in 93 matches, scoring nine goals. In 2006, he won his first titles: the Copa do Brasil and the Campeonato Carioca, repeating the state title in 2007. In 2008, he transferred to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany in a €10 million deal, a fee that helped the club pay off debts and retain midfielder Ibson.

After five years in Europe, he returned to Brazil in 2013, but revealed that Flamengo showed no interest in him. So, he moved on to Corinthians, where he became an idol , and later played for Beijing Guoan in China. At the end of his career, he played for Corinthians again and ended his career at Fluminense.

At 37 years old, Renato Augusto says goodbye as a player of refined class, with memorable spells at top clubs and call-ups to the Brazilian National Team , leaving his mark on national and international football.
