Considered one of the greatest players in the history of football, Romário defended the Flamengo jersey for five years between 1995 and 1999 and always makes a point of visiting the club . The striker even said goodbye to the Mais Querido claiming that he had gone to a nightclub in Caxias do Sul, where the red-black delegation was concentrated. Thus, the former player recalled the situation and revealed that he suffered injustice from the board at the time.
Romário said that at the time, Gilmar Rinaldi, Flamengo's football manager, fired him because he had gone to a nightclub. The former player also highlights that he took the club to court because the board tried to grant him a fair cause, but that he ended up winning in the first instance, and in the second, the Rubro-Negro paid everything it owed him.
They were coming, they wanted to show that they were the ones in charge, and they tried to use me as a scapegoat. It didn't work out and, unfortunately, I ended up leaving Flamengo. An exit that could have been very different", highlighted Romário when remembering his departure from Flamengo.
Romário joined Flamengo after being named the best player in the world and winning the 1994 World Cup. The forward wore the Sacred Mantle from 1995 to 1999. During that time, he scored 204 goals in 240 games, with an average of 0.85 goals per game, numbers that placed him as the fifth highest scorer for the Mais Querido. In addition, the former forward also won the Copa Mercosul (1999) and two Cariocas (1996 and 1999).
Now retired, Romário continues to follow Flamengo . The Mais Querido will only return to the field on June 16, when they face Esperánce (TUN) in the first round of the group stage of the Super World Cup. The red-and-black squad travels to the United States on the 11th.

Flamengo is enjoying a great run of form under Filipe Luís, leading some fans to dream of a repeat of the historic 2019 season , when, under Jorge Jesus, the club won the Brasileirão and Libertadores. However, ESPN journalist Paulo Cobos considers the comparison hasty.
Paulo Cobos on the current Flamengo: "The Portuguese wouldn't make the current squad play better"
"The Flamengo of 2025 won't be as good as Jorge Jesus's 2019, and that won't be Filipe Luís's fault . The current team has many players who have rarely played professionally in Brazil. Expensive reinforcements, like Emerson Royal, have just arrived and are already being booed," he stated.
Cobos also highlighted the difference in attack: "Any quartet that Filipe Luís fields is far from the splendor of Arrascaeta, Everton Ribeiro, Bruno Henrique, and Gabigol. It's clear that Jorge Jesus, in 2019, was much more experienced than Filipe is today , but even at his peak, the Portuguese wouldn't have made the current squad play any better than that team."
Flamengo returns to the field this Sunday (17), at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), against Internacional, at Beira-Rio, for the 20th round of the Brazilian Championship. Mengão is the leader of the Brasileirão with 40 points , three more than the vice-leader, Cruzeiro, but with one game less compared to the Minas Gerais club.

In total, there were four Mengão games under Ostojich's refereeing, with two wins, one draw and one defeat .
In the Maracanã match, played last Wednesday (13), Bruno Henrique scored, with a header, the winning goal for the red-black team in the first half. With the result, Filipe Luís' team can draw at Beira-Rio to advance to the quarterfinals .

Flamengo's top scorer this season , Arrascaeta gave a press conference this Friday (15), at Ninho do Urubu, and did not spare praise for coach Filipe Luís. The number 10 highlighted that the coach has been achieving results that others have not achieved at the club.
Arrascaeta on Filipe Luís at Flamengo: "Often they don't appreciate what Filipe is doing"
"We talk practically every day, sometimes before training, sometimes after. I'm happy with the work he's done here. We know Flamengo is different, the pressure is immense . They often don't appreciate what Filipe is doing with this team," said the Uruguayan, before adding:
"As qualified as the squad is, other coaches haven't been able to do what he's doing. It's a tribute to him. The way we play, the goals we score, and our defensive solidity . This is the result of his work. My respect for him goes beyond football," he concluded.
In the 2025 season, Arrascaeta has scored 14 goals in 38 matches, enjoying a high level of technical development. Under Filipe Luís, the midfielder has begun to play more centrally in the attack , enhancing his skills. For many, this is the most impactful period of his career at Flamengo since arriving in 2019.
With Arrascaeta available, Flamengo faces Internacional this Sunday (17), at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), at Beira-Rio, for the 20th round of the Brazilian Championship. The duel opens the return leg of the competition and will serve as a preview for the decisive clash between the teams in the Libertadores , scheduled for next week.
