Judge Simone Cavalieri Frota, from the 9th Special Criminal Court of Rio de Janeiro, accepted the Public Ministry's request to charge councilor Marcos Braz for bodily injury as a result of his participation in a fight with a Flamengo fan. The incident occurred in a shopping mall in the West Zone of Rio, generating great repercussions. In addition to Braz's fine, the judge ordered the shelving of the criminal case in which Leandro Campos Gonçalves, the fan involved in the fight, appeared as the perpetrator of aggression and threats against the councilor. The decision to archive was based on the impossibility of effectively launching a criminal action.

Also involved in the fight, Carlos André da Silva will have his case assessed, as the magistrate authorized the continuation of the case against him . The next stage will include a conciliation hearing to seek an agreement between the Flamengo manager and the fan. The Public Ministry's requests were based on the analysis of images from the mall's security cameras, which show Braz and Carlos chasing Leandro through the corridors of the establishment. The images show that Braz had struck Leandro in the neck, causing him to fall. The manager then bit the fan's right thigh.

According to prosecutor Márcio Almeida Ribeiro da Silva, the images also indicate that Carlos André da Silva practiced kicks against Leandro's head and body Gonçalves. Later, with the injured party lying on the ground, Marcos Braz allegedly threw kicks and punches at him. According to the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro, there is no consistent evidence in the file to indicate any criminal practice on the part of Leandro. At a press conference, the fan reaffirmed that he was the victim in the situation.

A medical report confirmed that Leandro suffered a bite to the groin during the fight, while Marcos Braz had an injury to his nose. The MP, however, argues that Braz's injury occurred when he fell on Leandro. In his defense, the councilor and vice-president of football at Flamengo claimed to have been threatened with death by fans. The Public Prosecutor's Office countered this version, claiming that the images do not contain audio recording and that there are no impartial witnesses to corroborate the allegations that Leandro had cursed and threatened Braz before the attacks.

An earlier version, in which Braz claimed that the fans threatened his daughter, was denied by the MP. The evidence shows that the daughter of Flamengo's vice president of football remained in the store for just 2 minutes and 40 seconds and left without having had contact with or noticed Leandro's presence. The fan approached Braz's store only after the councilman's daughter had left.

Estudiantes faces Flamengo this Thursday (18), at 9:30 pm, at Maracanã, for the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores . The Argentine club arrives under pressure due to irregular results in the season and seeks to rediscover the good football of the beginning of the year to overcome one of the strongest teams in Brazil.

In 2025, the La Plata team played 36 matches, totaling 15 wins, eight draws, and 13 losses, with 42 goals scored and 40 conceded, a success rate of just over 49%. Away from home, the record is even more challenging: in 18 away matches, they have recorded just five wins, four draws, and nine losses.

On the other hand, Flamengo has maintained a solid performance at Maracanã , where they have lost only four times this season, only two of which have come against the main team. This makes the match even more difficult for the Argentine team, which will need to overcome one of the most intense atmospheres on the continent.

STUDENTS COUNT ON STRENGTH IN ARGENTINA

While performance away from La Plata is a concern, Estudiantes ' home record is positive. In 17 matches, they've won nine, drawn four, and lost four . This home strength could be an asset in the return leg, but first, the team needs to contain Flamengo 's momentum in Rio de Janeiro.

HISTORY IN THE LIBERTADORES

A traditional Libertadores champion, Estudiantes shares the title with River Plate as the most successful Argentine team in the competition and demonstrates experience in knockout stages. In the current edition, they lost only two matches in the group stage, against Universidad de Chile and Botafogo. In the round of 16, they eliminated Cerro Porteño after a 1-0 away win and a 0-0 draw in the return leg in La Plata.
