At a Congress held last Friday (9), FIFA unanimously approved the revised edition of the Disciplinary Code, which will make the fight against racism in world football more rigorous. Thus, some points attracted attention, such as the possibility of a million-dollar fine and WO.
FIFA has determined in its new Disciplinary Code that cases of racism can reach a maximum fine of R$5 million Swiss francs (R$34 million). In addition, there is the possibility of matches not being finished, resulting in a WO. Gianni Infantino, president of the organization, stated that the new rules aim to end prejudice in world football.
INFANTINO'S SPEECH:
We now have the necessary legal framework to act more forcefully and decisively...

" At this meeting, the FIFA Council unanimously approved the modification of the FIFA Disciplinary Regulations, strengthening these rules and giving FIFA and its member associations more instruments and opportunities to combat racism. Tougher sanctions, of course. Not just fines and closed-door games, but also matches forfeited due to a match having to be stopped due to racist incidents. We need to be extremely strict on this matter. Naturally, each case will be examined individually, according to its own merits ," the president began.

" But we now have the legal framework in place to act more forcefully and decisively, both within FIFA and in individual countries around the world. An important decision, a significant step forward. A new regulation that will come into force later this summer, marking another decisive step towards eradicating racism from football. The revised Disciplinary Code represents a significant shift in FIFA's objective of strengthening its regulatory framework to prosecute and punish racist discrimination and abuse, in cooperation with our 211 Member Associations," he added.

NEW MEASURES THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO COMBAT RACISM:
  • New provisions to combat racist abuse: the three-step anti-discrimination procedure has been included in Article 15, which has been expanded to specifically address racism. All national football confederations and associations will be required to apply it;
  • Increased fines for racist abuse: the maximum amount of fines for racist abuse has been significantly increased, with the cap now set at CHF 5,000,000 (five million Swiss francs);
  • Accountability in cases of racist abuse: Players and officials will be able to help identify the perpetrators of racist insults to facilitate the necessary measures , including removing the aggressors from the stadium.
  • Disciplinary codes of FIFA Member Associations: AMs will be required to adapt their disciplinary regulations to align them with the general principles of the CDF.
  • FIFA's right of appeal and intervention in cases of racism: FIFA reserves the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against decisions in cases of racism, as well as to intervene when the responsible MA fails to take sufficient action.

This Thursday (18), Flamengo begins the dispute of the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores against Estudiantes, at Maracanã. On the eve of the confrontation, the president and idol of the Argentine club, Juan Sebastián Verón, spoke about the expectations for the duel against Rubro-Negro.

DIFFERENT LEVELS

During an institutional event in La Plata, Verón highlighted the financial difference between the teams , with Mengão being the team with the highest market value among the tournament participants, but recalled Estudiantes ' tradition of overcoming opponents considered favorites.

Estudiantes' Verón on Flamengo in the Libertadores: "Yes, the challenge is difficult"

"Obviously, we know the power of our opponent, but we also know that we've been through similar situations against important teams, and that the club, given its history, has risen to the occasion. We've always kept this in mind: yes, the challenge is difficult, but we can excel and represent the club well , regardless of the result. We've experienced this before, and we continue to do so," the director stated.

VERON X FLAMENGO

In the early 1990s, Verón began his career at Estudiantes and played in the 2-0 victory over Flamengo in the 1994 Supercopa Libertadores . In addition to his former club, the former midfielder also shone for major teams such as Boca Juniors, Lazio, Manchester United and Inter Milan . In 2007, he returned to Estudiantes and was a key player in their 2009 Copa Libertadores victory.

Verón retired in 2014, but returned to the field three years later as a player-president . His last official match came in 2017, against Botafogo, also in the Copa Libertadores, during the group stage.
