Matheus Eduardo 's participation in the Vukovar Defender's Memorial, held between April 24 and 28, was marked by goals and a symbolic legacy . The young striker defended the “Seleção da América”, a team formed by Croatian players living in the Americas, and was the second-highest scorer in the competition.
The tournament aims to identify talents with Croatian nationality spread across the world, with a focus on training the generation that will represent the country in under-15 competitions. In Matheus' case, the connection is blood: the son of Brazilian naturalized Croatian Eduardo da Silva , he has dual nationality, in addition to cultural experience between the two countries.
Matheus's "Seleção da América" faced traditional opponents in Croatian football. There were three matches against Dinamo Zagreb, Lokomotiv Zagreb and HNK Šibenik. Despite the defeats in the three rounds, Matheus scored four goals — two against Dinamo and two against Šibenik. In addition to his performance in official matches, the Flamengo striker also played in a friendly against the "Seleção da Alemanha e Sweden" and scored two more goals, totaling six goals in five games.
The detail that caught everyone's attention was the number printed on Matheus' back: the number 22, the same one his father wore in the 2014 World Cup, when he played for Croatia in Brazil. According to Eduardo, neither he nor his son asked for the number — the choice was made by the organizers. — It was a nice gesture. We didn't agree on anything, but I believe it was a tribute. I was moved to see it — Eduardo told ge.
Eduardo da Silva was one of the great names of the Croatian national team in the 2000s and 2010s, scoring 29 goals in 64 games. Discovered in Brazil, he became a naturalized Croatian at a young age and made history in European football with spells at Arsenal and Shakhtar Donetsk, as well as wearing the Flamengo shirt in 2014.

Flamengo continues to restructure its youth academy and has confirmed another new signing. The club has signed Botafogo star midfielder Marcelo Portela to bolster its under-15 squad . The youngster became famous after a viral move, when he pulled off a stunning dribble on Vini Jr., leaving the Real Madrid star sitting on the floor.
The incident took place in July 2024 , during a futsal game at Canto do Rio, in Niterói, where Vini took his first steps in football at the age of seven. On that occasion, Marcelo Portela not only outplayed the 2024 world player of the year, but also scored the goal in the sequence of the play .
Despite the dribble, Vini took it all in stride: he laughed at the play, congratulated the young talent, and even posed for photos with him after the match . Information about the club's new signing was initially reported by the FlaZoeiro and FlaBase pages.
Because he was born in 2010 and is not yet of legal age to sign a professional contract, Marcelo Portela signed a youth development contract with Flamengo . The agreement also provides for a division of rights with Botafogo, his previous club.
While watching the incident with Marcelo Portela continue to resonate, Vini Jr. is enjoying some downtime. Suspended from the match against Chile and not called up by Carlo Ancelotti , the striker took advantage of his time off to relax in Marbella, Spain, where he was spotted cruising on a yacht.
