The elimination of Flamengoin the Copa Libertadores was not an accident on the road, but a reflection of structural problems and mistaken decisions that have been accumulating for months. The lack of evolution in the team's performance, combined with questionable choices by the board and Tite's inability to correct obvious deficiencies, ended up resulting in a failure that was already underway. It is no surprise that the team fell by the wayside against Olimpia, especially considering the stance and planning adopted.

The main point of criticism begins with the assembly of the squad. Since Pedro's injury, Flamengo has lacked a suitable replacement. The option to keep Carlinhos and Gabriel, the “Gabi-ex-gol”, as attacking alternatives, proved to be a serious error. Carlinhos is a young man still developing and should not be played in such a pressure situation. Gabriel, once the protagonist, is going through a technical and emotional phase far below expectations, and was unable to find himself in the team under Tite's command.

FLAMENGO HAS FAILURE IN THE 2024 SEASON

The lack of planning was evident when, instead of looking for alternatives on the market, the board opted for internal solutions that did not have the capacity to replace Pedro's presence in the attack. This disproportionate reliance on limited pieces was costly and exposed the inefficiency of the offensive sector in decisive moments. The mistaken view that Flamengo could maintain the same level without its main striker proved to be a blunder.

The situation gets worse when analyzing the collective performance. Flamengo, which until then was known for its dominant style of play, has lost that identity. The team started to become predictable and with glaring flaws in marking. Under Tite's command, a tactical adjustment and a recovery of confidence were expected. However, this did not happen. On the contrary, the team seemed to lose itself even more on the field, showing a lack of defensive organization and, mainly, an absence of creativity in the construction of plays.

Another highlight was the performance of the defense, which fluctuated throughout the competition. Individual mistakes and the difficulty of positioning correctly in basic moves cost important goals and ended up determining elimination. Players like Fabrício Bruno, who stood out in the Brazilian Championship, did not maintain the same level in the decisive games of the Libertadores. This highlights the need for a reformulation in the sector and the search for pieces that can really add value to high-level competitions.

After the defeat in the first leg of the quarter-finals, against Peñarol (URU), Tite promised that Flamengo would score in the second leg. However, in 180 minutes of confrontation with the Uruguayans, there was no ball in the net and the Montevideo team classified with an aggregate score of 1-0. At the end of the press conference, journalist Gabriel Reis (Paparazzo Rubro-Negro) irritated Tite by remember the unfulfilled goal. Check it out:

Paparazo: “A goal is going to be scored, right? You said that, right?”.

Tite: “Yes, I designed it. Because it is my professional activity. One thing is a promise, but I don't have a crystal ball”, said the coach, with his finger raised.

Paparazzo: “Yeah, thanks. The goal came, right? Thanks, Tite. You were right.”

What's the promise?

At Maracanã, Peñarol won 1-0, with Flamengo having more chances created in the departure. In a press conference on September 19, the coach assured that he would not waste so many opportunities in the second leg, held this Thursday (26), at the Campeón del Siglo Stadium.

“There will be a goal (in the return game), they can charge me. Flamengo will create half of what they created today and will score goals there. Cover me later“, said Tite, after the first leg. However, the reality was different, and Flamengo barely created any opportunities, even with more than 70% of the ball.

What now?

In a match played on Thursday night (26), Flamengo drew 0-0 with Peñarol at the Campeón del Siglo Stadium, in Uruguay, for the return of the Libertadores quarter-finals. The result ended Rubro-Negro's participation in the continental tournament, leaving the club out of the title race. With the elimination, the team now turns its attention to national competitions, including the Brazilian Championship and the Copa do Brasil.
TITE EXPLAINS DECISION ON GABIGOL

After the draw, coach Tite talked about the choice not to start the match with Gabigol among the starters. The attacker, who came on in the second half, only had one clear shot, but had little influence on the game, something that has been recurring since the coach took charge.

"Any observation made now may seem simple. If we don't put Gabi in, it's because we don't put him in. If we put him in, it's because we put him in. After the game, everything is easy to criticize. We wanted a player in the area, and this was reflected in an important chance. Unfortunately, we were unable to convert it into a goal", declared Tite.

NEXT CHALLENGES IN THE BRASILEIRÃO AND BRAZILIAN CUP< With the result, the Mengão says goodbye to the Libertadores and directs his focus to national disputes. The team's next commitment will be for the Brazilian Championship, when they will face Athletico-PR on Sunday (29), at 8 pm, at Maracanã, for the 28th round of the competition. Furthermore, the club remains alive in the Copa do Brasil, with the mission of seeking titles in 2024.

Vítor Pereira, former Corinthians coach and Flamengo, reflected on his professional choices and admitted that the decision to play in Brazilian football was not the right one in sporting terms. In an interview with the Portuguese newspaper "A Bola", he commented that, despite the financial gains, going to Brazil did not bring the expected results for his career and that, with more patience, he could have followed other paths in Europe.

Pereira began his career in Brazil when he took command of Corinthians in 2022, but his time there was marked by ups and downs. He faced challenges such as adapting to the local style of play, the intense pace of competitions and constant pressure for results. In the end, he was unable to win major titles and decided to end his stay at the São Paulo club at the end of that year. FLAMENGO LIVES IN THE PAST OF VITOR PEREIRA

< The coach highlighted that, at the time, opportunities arose from clubs in more consolidated markets on the European scene, such as England and Spain. However, the financial attractiveness of Brazilian football ended up weighing on his decision. "There were some steps I shouldn't have taken," he said. Choosing Brazil, according to him, was a mistake considering his long-term career ambitions.

In addition, Pereira faced severe criticism during his short spell at Flamengoin 2023, where the pressure for results and the club's troubled environment made it difficult for him to stay. He ended up being fired a few months after taking office, unable to impress his style and meet the expectations of the board and fans. The scenario, for the coach, showed that a more careful analysis of the challenges and reality of Brazilian football would have been more appropriate.
