The Flamengosaid goodbye to Libertadores 2024 in a frustrating way, being eliminated by Peñarol and ending its campaign with a success of just 46.6%. With a total of 10 games played, Rubro-Negro recorded four wins, two draws and four defeats, a performance well below the expectations of one of the main teams in South America and which directly impacts the team's evaluation for the remainder of the season.

Flamengo's participation in the group stage indicated that the team would have a complicated path in the continental competition. Alternating good performances with irregular performances, the Rio club was unable to impose itself as in previous editions. Irregularity was one of the main problems, with results that varied from significant victories to unexpected stumbles, such as a draw against teams considered weaker on paper.

TITE'S FLAMENGO IS APATIC

Despite qualifying for the knockout stage, the team showed signs of fluctuation that were reflected in matches against stronger opponents. The defense, for example, suffered from inattention and individual failures at crucial moments, while the attack, in many games, had difficulty breaking through well-positioned defenses, making the offensive performance irregular and ineffective. The success of just 46.6% exposes the team's difficulties and represents one of the worst recent performances of Flamengoin the competition.

The elimination for Peñarol in the round of 16 was the point of rupture in Flamengo's trajectory in this Libertadores. In two games, Rubro-Negro failed to impose itself, accumulating a defeat in the first game and only a draw in the second leg, a result insufficient to guarantee classification. The setback increased the pressure on the squad and the coaching staff, who now have the mission of adjusting the team for the remaining challenges of the year, such as the Brazilian Championship and the Copa do Brasil.

The defeat to Peñarol, although unexpected, was a reflection of the difficulties already presented in the group stage. Flamengo faced difficulties with defensive compaction and a lack of creativity in midfield, sectors that proved vulnerable against a more organized and efficient Peñarol. The elimination exposed weaknesses that the team will have to correct quickly to prevent the problems from extending into the rest of the season.

Victory to respect

Despite being a competition to open the season, Flamengo's victory gives a boost to the season. After all, Minas is the team to beat in Brazilian women's volleyball. Thus, in the last five Superligas, the Belo Horizonte team won four titles and one runner-up. In the squad, there are athletes who have played for the Brazilian team, such as Thaísa, Olympic champion and bronze medalist in this year's edition, in Paris.

Superliga

The dates of the Women's Super League have not yet been announced. However, there is an expectation that the competition will start in October. In total, 12 teams will play the tournament, in a round-robin system, with the eight best qualifying for the quarter-finals.

In the last edition, after all, Flamengo was eliminated by Praia Clube in the semi-final . Therefore, the goal for 2024/25 is to reach the decision and repeat the title won in 2000/01, when Rubro-Negro beat Vasco, in a historic decision at the Ginásio do Maracanãzinho.

FIFA will announce the venues for the 2025 Super Club World Cup this Saturday (28). The announcement will be made during the Global Citizen Festival. The event will be held in Central Park, New York. FIFA did not detail how many cities and stadiums will host the 2025 edition. This will be the first time that the tournament will feature 32 teams.

The Super World Cup will be held between June 15 and July 13, 2025 The competition already has 30 qualified teams, with three Brazilians among them: Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense. Brazil may have one more representative. This is because Atlético-MG and Botafogo are fighting for the last South American place in the competition — the Libertadores title gives them the place. Peñarol [if they win the Libertadores] and Olímpia [if River wins the Libertadores] are the other teams in the running.

What will the Super Mundial be like?

< The competition organized by FIFA will be played for the first time with 32 teams next year. The United States will host the first edition of the tournament in this format. The 32 teams will be divided into eight groups with four teams each, with them facing each other in a single round. The top two in each group will advance to the round of 16. The knockout stage will be played in a single game.

The places are divided into: 12 for Europe, six for South America, four for Asia, Africa and North, Central America and the Caribbean, one for Oceania and one for the host country.

In addition to the remaining MLS spot, which has not yet defined its representative, the other available entry belongs to South America. It is destined for the champion of the edition of 2024 of the Libertadores. If River Plate wins the title, it will be transferred to the Conmebol ranking in FIFA and would already have an owner: Olímpia-PAR.

Flamengo fans remember former coach's speech after elimination

The club has its respective problems this season

The Flamengo, one of the most powerful clubs and with the biggest fans in Brazilian football, faces a crisis that goes beyond the four lines. Amid inconsistent results and a constant dance of coaches, the root of the problem appears to be within the club itself. The phrase from former coach Domenec Torrent, who categorically states that "Flamengo's problem is within Flamengo", points to an internal disorganization that is reflected on the field. And this does not depend on the coach in charge — whether renowned or unknown. According to Torrent, as long as internal issues are not resolved, the team will continue to face difficulties, regardless of who is in charge.

Torrent's comment is not just limited to a superficial diagnosis. The coach, who had a brief and turbulent spell at the club, had a view from inside the dressing room and dealt directly with problems that today seem to persist. When he mentions that the difficulties would continue with any big name, such as Ancelotti, Klopp or Guardiola, the message he sends is clear: the situation goes beyond tactics or game philosophy. It is structural and is deeply rooted in behavior and internal attitudes.

FLAMENGO HAS AN INSTITUTIONAL PROBLEM

The expression "While these two are at Flamengo, anyone can come" also reinforces the idea that there are specific figures within the club who make it difficult to develop consistent work. Even without mentioning names, it is understood that there is an unresolved power relationship between the main actors in charge of the club. This apparently negative influence crosses different administrations and prevents any coach, no matter how competent and respected he may be, from implementing his ideas and establishing a lasting game model.

To better understand the impact of Torrent's statements, it is important remember the context in which he took over Flamengo. The Spanish coach arrived at the club in 2020, shortly after the departure of Jorge Jesus, a coach who had achieved almost everything with the team and left a legacy that would be difficult to overcome. Expectations were high, but Torrent had difficulty adapting to Brazilian football and was harshly criticized for his choices and lack of significant results. His stay was short and ended bitterly, but his observations left an important point: Flamengo's internal environment does not favor the continuity of work, no matter how competent the coach is.
