Flamengo is very close to officially signing Irish striker Mikey Johnston, 26. The player belongs to West Bromwich in England, and his arrival at the Rio de Janeiro club is expected to cost around five million pounds — approximately R$37 million at the current exchange rate. The move is a strong indication that changes will be made to the squad for the rest of the season.
The advanced negotiations are taking place at a time of uncertainty regarding the future of important players in the red-black attack, such as Michael and Everton Cebolinha. Michael has been attracting interest from Al Duhail, from Qatar, since before the Club World Cup. Cebolinha, who has lost his place under coach Filipe Luís, has not yet received official proposals , but could be negotiated if interesting offers arise from a financial point of view.
Mikey Johnston is a striker who plays mainly on the left flank, but has the versatility to play on the right flank as well. A Celtic youth product, the Irishman scored four goals in 20 appearances for West Bromwich in the last season's Championship , the second tier of English football. For the Irish national team, he has three goals in 11 games.
Flamengo 's coaching staff and football board approved the signing, which is expected to be made official in the coming days. With Johnston's arrival, the competition for positions on the wings increases, a sector that already has names such as Bruno Henrique, Luiz Araújo and Gonzalo Plata — in addition to the aforementioned Michael and Cebolinha.
The move for Mikey Johnston is part of a broader plan by the club's board , which also intends to announce at least two more signings in the current transfer window: a fast winger and a midfielder with a creative profile. The changes aim to give coach Filipe Luís more options and prepare the squad for the decisive matches in the calendar.
Mengão wants to renew with the coach until at least the end of the 2026 season, but the commentator says the coach asked to wait

Commentator Denílson revealed that Filipe Luís is in no rush to renew his contract with Flamengo. The coach's contract runs until the end of the current season, and although he is highly valued internally , his lack of clarity opens the door to speculation and even potential interest from European clubs if a deal doesn't materialize.
Denílson on Filipe Luís at Flamengo: "He signaled that he still doesn't want to renew"
Despite his excellent work at the helm of the club, Filipe Luís will likely negotiate a salary increase to extend his contract . According to Denílson, the board understands that the former full-back has already become a technical and strategic asset to the club, but the decision should be made naturally in the coming months.
During his commentary, Denílson mentioned Jorge Jesus, currently at Al-Nassr, but ruled out any possibility of the Portuguese coach returning to Flamengo . He believes the coach will be remembered only for his winning streak in 2019 and 2020, without posing a threat to the continuity of the current project.
"Filipe Luís has signaled that he doesn't want to renew yet. Flamengo said: 'Shall we renew? Wait a minute.' If Filipe Luís doesn't renew, who would be a good name for this Flamengo ? They're in a good phase and swimming with ease... But forget it, this guy (Jorge Jesus) isn't coming back ," said Denílson.
Due to the FIFA World Cup, Flamengo will be sidelined for two weeks. Filipe Luís's side will return to action on September 14th at 4pm (Brasília time) against Juventude at Alfredo Jaconi Stadium for the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship. With 47 points, Flamengo remains in the lead, followed by Cruzeiro (44) and Palmeiras (43).
Mengão's star has been standing out this season and the Giallorossi athlete says that being the number 10 would be a great reinforcement for the Italian team.

Currently at Roma, Wesley is also part of Carlo Ancelotti's Brazilian national team squad . The full-back started in the 3-0 victory over Chile on the 5th at Maracanã, but missed the 1-0 loss to Bolivia in El Alto.
