Flamengo is about to reinforce its squad with midfielder Marcos Antônio, currently inLazio. In a strategic move to strengthen the team, Marcos Braz and Bruno Spindel, representatives of the Rio club, held a video call with the player this Monday (1st). Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol, has been training separately from Flamengo's main squad while awaiting a decision from the club's board of directors. The determination to keep him away was an exclusive choice by Flamengo's top management, without the participation or approval of coach Tite or the technical committee. Currently, there is a "cold war" between shirt 99 and the board, led by Rodolfo Landim. Neither side is willing to give in, prolonging the player's absence from the field.
Sources close to Gabigol state that the player's desire is still to remain at Flamengo, but he is looking for a renewal contract with a longer term than the one offered of just one year. However, he did not expect the board's retaliation in keeping him out of the match against Cuiabá and possibly throughout the transfer window, which further discouraged the player about a possible resolution.
The fact that Tite used Carlinhos and spared Pedro, something that had only happened against Palmeiras in April, in a game in which Gabigol was also unavailable, made it clear to the attacker that he is not a priority for the coach. This raises questions about the viability of a contract renewal, as it would be a reserve and little used.
As of today (07/06), Gabigol maintains his stance of not signing or talking to any club until his situation with Flamengo is resolved. Gabriel never spoke to Palmeiras nor signed any type of contract. Although there is the possibility of him moving to a competitive club next season, his priority is to have the opportunity to play and develop his football. Being a reserve is not the problem, but the lack of opportunities bothers him.
BOARD POSITION
A Flamengo's board does not intend to sell the player for any price; financial compensation of R$10 million, for example, would not be acceptable. The decision to remove Gabigol was not part of the planning of the technical committee, which did not contest the decision so as not to contradict the board. The "cold war" continues, and the board is not willing to resolve the impasse until Gabriel accepts the one-year offer or the transfer window closes. At the moment, the board is not considering offering more than what has already been discussed.
