GENERATION OF 2019 SEES "DROUGHT" OF TITLES IN FLAMENGO'S DISASTROUS YEAR

However, that sweet memory now stands out as the last great triumph for the club, which, in 2023, faces a frustrating season after several attempts to win titles.

Exactly one year ago, Gabigol scored the goal that guaranteed Flamengo's 1-0 victory over Athletico-PR, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, thus winning their third title in the Conmebol Libertadores (you can remember this moment in the video below) . This sweet memory represents the last title that Flamengo celebrated, as the club entered 2023 full of hope, but the season is heading towards a disappointing outcome.

Flamengo started the year with the promise of playing in seven competitions. However, the team finished as runner-up to Carioca, the Copa do Brasil, the Supercopa do Brasil and the Recopa Sul-Americana. In the Club World Cup, Rubro-Negro was eliminated in the semi-final, and in Conmebol Libertadores, they left the competition early in the round of 16. Now, the last hope lies in the Brasileirão, but Flamengo is only in fifth place, nine points behind leader Botafogo, who still has one game to play and could open up a 12-point lead if they beat Cuiabá next Sunday.< /p>

This is the first time that the "2019 Generation", made up of players like Gabigol, Bruno Henrique, Arrascaeta, Everton Ribeiro and others, faces a period without titles. With this talented group, Flamengo has won 11 titles in the last four years, including three Cariocas (2019, 2020 and 2021), two Libertadores (2019 and 2022), two Brazilian Championships (2019 and 2020), two Brazilian Super Cups (2020 and 2021), a Brazilian Cup (2022) and a South American Recopa (2020). Now, the club is reliving a period without titles that it has not experienced since 2018.

Arrascaeta expressed the group's feeling well: "We know that this year has been very frustrating for us. We are not used to it. We are We are used to lifting trophies, so this is an atypical year, and we need to keep our heads up", he said after the Brazilian Cup final defeat to São Paulo at Morumbi. In the 23 years of this century to date, Flamengo has faced a similar or greater period of drought on only six occasions (see list below).

The worst of them happened between Carioca's titles in 2014 and 2017, when the club went three years and 24 days without winning. Likewise, between the 2001 and 2004 State Championships, Flamengo also faced almost three seasons of fasting, with a period of two years, nine months and seven days without titles. Currently, Flamengo was overtaken by Grêmio and left the G-4, as the match against Bragantino was postponed.

The club has 50 points on the leaderboard and runs the risk of ending Sunday in sixth place if Athletico-PR beats São Paulo at the Ligga Arena. In search of a direct place in the 2024 Libertadores, Rubro-Negro will return to the field on Wednesday, when they will face Santos at 8 pm (Brasília time) at Mané Garrincha, as Maracanã is ceded to Conmebol for the final of the Liberators.

"Respect is the feeling..." Flamengo has Tite's words echoed behind the scenes with the fans

In an interview given after the defeat of Flamengoto Peñarol, 1-0, coach Tite was direct in responding to the boos received by the fans. The statement, marked by a frank tone, exposed the coach's pragmatic vision in relation to demanding fans and the pressure for results. “I respect the fans’ feelings. Of course I feel that (the boos), I'm human”, said Tite, recognizing the fans' frustration in the face of the setback.

Tite's speech reveals that he understands the role of fans as a fundamental part in the context of a club, especially in a team of great expression like Flamengo. By mentioning that the boos affect him as a human being, the coach demonstrates empathy, but does not fail to highlight that the only way to reverse this situation is with achievements on the field. “It can only be reversed in one way”, pointed out the coach.

THE MISTAKE THAT COSTED EXTREMELY DEARLY

The response reflects the experience of Titein dealing with pressure who follows the command of great teams in Brazilian football. With successful spells at clubs such as Corinthians, Grêmio and the Brazilian national team itself, the coach has a track record that puts him in a position to understand, perhaps like few others, the relationship between performance on the field and fans' expectations. For him, this connection is clear: “Do you know how to win fans? Do you know how I won over the fans of the other clubs I played for? Win an important title”, he declared.

The phrase highlights the centrality of titles in football, especially in mass clubs like Flamengo. In Brazil, the culture of results is intense, and Tite recognizes that fans have a limited tolerance for negative results. Winning titles, for him, is the key to gaining the support of the fans, and anything other than that results in discontent: “If not, bye.”

This last part of Tite's speech summarizes the characteristic impatience of demanding fans like Flamengo. The coach makes it clear that, without obtaining relevant trophies, the relationship with the fans deteriorates quickly. The pressure is constant and is part of the daily life of those who take on the leadership of top teams. Tite seems, however, to be aware of this scenario and how it needs to be faced.

Tite's statement came after a delicate moment for Flamengo. The defeat to Peñarol, at home, in a group stage match of the Copa Libertadores, raised alarm bells for fans and the coaching staff. Flamengo had high expectations for the season, especially after major reinforcements and the arrival of Tite, a coach with wide recognition on the national and international scene.

The pressure on Flamengo is nothing new. The club, which has one of the biggest fans in the world, is known for its high expectations for titles. The expensive squad, made up of renowned players, also increases this demand. Each stumble is widely covered by the media and amplifies the dissatisfaction of part of the fans, who demand immediate results.

CAN IT GO BAD AT THE MOMENT?

The Copa Libertadores, in particular, has a important meaning for Flamengo and its fans. The continental tournament is seen as one of the club's main objectives each season. Any result other than victory can generate dissatisfaction and pressure on the technical committee, as occurred after the setback against Peñarol.

In this context, Tite's speech not only recognizes the fans' dissatisfaction, but also is realistic in relation to what is expected from a club like Flamengo. The demand for titles is part of the package when taking over a club of this size, and the coach seems to be aware of this when he points out that he will only be able to win the support of the fans with significant victories.

The Flamengo was fined by Conmebol due to incidents with his fans during the match against Bolívar, held on August 15, at Maracanã, in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores. The 2-0 victory guaranteed a good result for the club, but inappropriate behavior from the fans, such as the use of flares and other pyrotechnic objects, resulted in financial sanctions for the Rio team.

The club was punished based on in article 12.2 c) of the Conmebol Disciplinary Code, which prohibits the use of flares, fireworks or any type of pyrotechnics in stadiums. Furthermore, Flamengo was included in article 27, which provides for more severe penalties for clubs that repeat infractions of this nature. This is not the first incident of its kind involving Flamengo fans, which contributed to the decision to impose a significant fine.

VALUES DISCLOSED

The value The total fine was set at US$20,000 (equivalent to R$110,400). Furthermore, Conmebol ordered Flamengo to pay an additional US$13,300 (around R$73,600) to cover expenses related to hospitality space during the game, a responsibility that, according to article 4.2.13 of the Libertadores Club Manual, is from the home club.

These infractions are considered serious, especially in international tournaments such as the Libertadores, where Conmebol adopts a strict stance to guarantee security and order in the stadiums. The recurrence of Flamengo in this This type of behavior can be seen as an aggravating factor in the decision of judge Amarílis Belisario, vice-president of the Conmebol Disciplinary Commission.
