Grenades and knives seized in clashes between Flamengo and Vasco fans

Confusion in Rio de Janeiro generates 31 detainees

Rio de Janeiro witnessed fights between the organized fans of Flamengo and Vasco last Sunday (15), before and after the classic at Maracanã, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The Military Police (PM) detained 31 people involved in the confusion.

According to information from the newspaper 'UOL', the Military Police detained several people and hospitalized five other men. Furthermore, the PM seized war artifacts, such as grenades, as well as wood, knives and sticks. The police used an armored 'caveirão' to contain the fights.

Understand the case

The organized fans of Flamengo and Vasco met in the morning in the Tanque neighborhood, in the West Zone of Rio. During the confusion, two men were lynched and left bloodied, and were taken to the nearest Emergency Care Unit (UPA) . The police were called and detained ten people.


The violence spread to two other points. In Vicente de Carvalho, in the North Zone, there were even gunshots. The 41st Battalion surrounded the area and arrested six men who were carrying a grenade and two wooden sticks.


Another place of conflict was Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense. The PM had to use an armored ‘caveirão’ to control the confusion between the two organizations. In total, 12 men were arrested, carrying wooden cables and explosive devices.

The game

On the field, Flamengo and Vasco had a lively confrontation. Rubro-Negro took the lead with a goal from Gerson, but Philippe Coutinho equalized for the Vasco team in the final minutes, ending the match 1-1.

Now, Flamengo leaves the Brazilian Championship aside and turns its attention to the Copa Libertadores. Mais Querido will face Peñarol (URU) next Thursday (19), at 7pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã, in the quarter-finals of the continental competition.
