The Flamengo was left with a 1-1 draw against Millionarios in the Libertadores group stage debut on Tuesday night (2). However, the result did not please the fans. That's because Rubro Negro was winning, but conceded the draw due to an individual error. Thus, journalist Paulo Calçade blamed the altitude for the team's poor performance.

The game was played in Colombia, in Bogotá, at the El Campín stadium, at an altitude of more than 2,600 meters. After the match, the ESPN commentator highlighted the difficulties that the Flamengo faced it.

'People say 'altitude doesn't do difference at 2600 meters'. It's not true, it doesn't matter when we are in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, whatever, 800 meters away, no one gets sick. But the 2600 is different', he began.

CALÇADE RELIEVES THE SIDE OF FLAMENGO PLAYERS IN A DRAW WITH MILLIONARIOS

“Mainly for sports that require a of greater endurance, and in the case of football, a game lasting 90 minutes or more. And today you saw in Flamengo a team trying to save itself, manage time, effort, intensity. But those at home will attack this. They know how difficult the opponent is and put more pressure on.”

“Rubro-Negro lacked intensity, as time went by it fell, and this draws the opponent into situations. What we saw here in terms of advantages in the interior of the area, we will not see at sea level, Flamengo will be much superior”, projected Calçade.

DETAILS THAT CAN CHANGE THE GAME

Still talking about the difficulties of Flamengo to play at altitude, the journalist explained the effect generated on the athletes:  “At this altitude, oxygen absorption, to summarize, is 25% lower. There is a very big drop and that is what we saw in the Flamengo team”, he said, before concluding.

“Due to the resistance in the composition of gases in the atmosphere, at this altitude of 2000 meters, it is as if you had the wind in your favor at the time of the kick. And that's why they kick all the time, from everywhere. These are details that can change a football game.”

Former Vasco player André Balada had a successful career in football, with achievements such as the Copa do Brasil and games with the Brazilian team, as well as time in Europe. However, the former striker revealed that he only had one dream left to fulfill: playing for Flamengo.

In an interview with journalist Igor Rodrigues, André preferred to remain secretive, but said that he did not play for his favorite team and that Mais Querido is still alive in the current Libertadores. However, his father ended the suspense by saying that Flamengo is the club that has had the former striker's heart since his childhood.

"(What was missing from his career?) He missed winning a Brazilian championship. ( Wasn't there a club missing?) My father is a Basque fan (laughs), I played for his club. (Did he play for yours?) Yeah... No. (Can you tell me which team you love?) When I can, I go and watch my team's games. (Is he at Libertadores?) Yes, he's at Libertadores", said André, who saw the mystery go 'down the drain' because of his father.

“His dream was to play for Flamengo. We spent a month negotiating with Flamengo, it almost worked”, said Lenílson Marins, André Balada’s father. The aforementioned dialogue took place in 2011. The player played for Bordeux (FRA), and would be loaned to Mais Querido and even embarked from France to Brazil. However, on a stopover in Germany, his phone rang and the businessman informed him that he had signed a deal with Atlético-MG at the last minute.

Flamengo didn't have many opportunities to celebrate when playing at extreme altitudes, but when they did, they owed a lot to their goalkeepers who were red-and-black heroes high in the mountains. Rossi was a fundamental part of Mais Querido's classification against Bolívar.

Rossi made seven saves during the match, including a very difficult one in the second half and was thus voted the best player on the field after the defeat by 1 to 0 against Bolívar in the 3640m in La Paz, in which Mais Querido guaranteed classification. In this way, the archer repeated a feat performed by Diego Alves in the 2019 Libertadores da América.

A curious fact that links the two in these matches is that they both played in Flamengo. Diego Alves even reposted a post on Instagram stories with a photo of him next to Rossi and praising the shirt. Another coincidence was the opposing goalkeeper: in both cases it was Lampe.

In addition to the saves and miracles, what also caught attention and fans compared and made memes on social media is the ability to cool down matches by waxing. The experienced Diego Alves has always been seen as a specialist in tying up the game. Last Thursday, Rossi gained precious seconds for the team to breathe during the ball throw-ins, which even the president of Bolívar made criticize Flamengo's Argentine goalkeeper.
