Flamengo in 2019, under the command of Jorge Jesus, achieved historic feats. The team won the Brazilian Championship with 90 points and led to the Libertadores after a brilliant campaign, ending with an epic comeback over River Plate. Furthermore, the squad had high-level players, such as Bruno Henrique, Gabigol a>and Arrascaeta, who were decisive in key moments. In numbers, the team achieved 86% success, being one of the best performances in the history of Brazilian football.
On the other hand, Botafogo of 2024 is experiencing an exceptional year in the Brasileirão, leading comfortably and presenting an efficient tactical system under the leadership of its coach. Alvinegro has shown consistency and a solid defense, which makes it a difficult team to beat. However, to date, the club has not yet won significant titles or presented the same level of protagonism in international competitions, which makes the comparison with Flamengo 2019 unfeasible.
TOTALLY DIFFERENT COMPARISONS
Flamengo's superiority in 2019 is also reflected in the offensive impact. During that year's campaign, the team scored 86 goals in the Brasileirão, an average of more than two per game. Furthermore, Rubro-Negro stood out in decisive games, such as the 5-0 victory over Grêmio in the Libertadores semifinal. Botafogo in 2024, although efficient, presents a more modest attack, prioritizing pragmatic results to the detriment of spectacular performances, journalist Venê Casagrande spoke about the case: “I repeat: there is no way to compare.”< /p>
Another relevant point in the discussion is the weight of the cast. The 2019 Flamengo was made up of players who stood out in their positions and had wide international recognition. Many were called up to their national teams and shone in high-level competitions. On the other hand, the 2024 Botafogo squad, although efficient in the national context, has not yet reached the same level of notoriety or protagonism outside of Brazil.
FLAMENGO MARCOU HISTORY
Therefore, the comparison between Flamengo in 2019 and Botafogo in 2024 is not supported by the numbers, the context or the achievements achieved. While Rubro-Negro consolidated its name in the history of world football with a memorable season, Alvinegro still seeks to achieve important achievements to be placed on the same level. The debate, although interesting, seems to be based more on personal preferences than on objective criteria.

The game will be played next Thursday (18), at 9:30 pm (Brasília time) , at Maracanã, with ESPN broadcast throughout Brazil.

The most memorable match refereed by Rojas occurred in 2017 , when Flamengo thrashed Palestino 5-0 in the Copa Sudamericana at the Luso-Brasileiro Stadium. In that match, Vinícius Jr. scored his first professional goal for the red-and-black team.
In addition to announcing the schedule, Conmebol announced this Tuesday (16) a new feature for the quarterfinal stage.
