Flamengo's interest in Alcaraz didn't come out of nowhere

The Flamengo, since last year, has maintained an interest in Carlos Alcaraz, an Argentine player who currently plays for Southampton. In 2023, when Alcaraz was still playing for Racing, the Rio club showed interest in signing him. At the time, Flamengo even considered entering the competition for the midfielder, but Southampton ended up winning, paying €13.5 million to secure the player.
The amount invested by the English club was considered high for South American standards, which made it difficult for teams like Flamengo to compete. The red-black board, although interested, assessed that the amount involved in the negotiation exceeded the limit that the club was willing to invest at that time. Racing, in turn, saw Southampton's proposal as a financially irrefutable opportunity, and so the deal was closed with the Premier League club.
Since then, Carlos Alcaraz has been monitored by Flamengo. The player, who stood out at Racing for his technical ability and ability to read the game, is still seen as a player who could add a lot to the red and black squad. However, the reality of the European market imposed barriers that the Rio club was unable to overcome at that time. Even so, the desire to count on Alcaraz was never completely discarded by Flamengo's board.
However, competition with European clubs, which have greater financial power, ended up removing Flamengo from the dispute at that time. Southampton's proposal, in addition to being financially superior, offered Alcaraz the chance to play in one of the most competitive leagues in the world, the Premier League. This factor was decisive for the player, who chose to move to England, seeking to develop his career in a highly competitive environment.
The teams play the first game of the quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

Tite defined Flamengo and announced the 11 starters who will face Peñarol, this Thursday, at Maracanã, at 7pm. De la Cruz returns to the starting lineup in place of Léo Ortiz, and Alex Sandro and Plata were retained. The duel with the Uruguayans is the first between the teams in the quarter-finals of the Copa Conmebol Libertadores.

Alex Sandro and Plata, debutants in last Sunday's classic, remain in the team after having good performances in the draw against Vasco. Gabigol is now out of the relationship due to fibrosis in the posterior muscle of his right thigh. Flamengo, in a statement, reported that the athlete did not suffer any injury in the region. "The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that the athlete Gabriel Barbosa underwent tests that did not diagnose an injury to the posterior muscle of his right thigh. However, the Technical Committee opted for precaution and did not list him for the duel against Peñarol due to fibrosis in the region. Gabi is handed over to physiotherapists and physical trainers for the series of decisive games of the season."

Carlos Alcaraz, Argentine midfielder from Flamengo, was once again available to Tite after serving a suspension in the last game against Vasco, valid for the Brazilian Championship. Now, he is preparing for the decisive Libertadores clash against Peñarol (URU), where he should be one of the fundamental pieces of the red and black squad.
Since August 30th, when he started training at Ninho do Urubu, Alcaraz has been attracting attention for its performance. His first match for Mengão took place on September 1st, in a game against Corinthians, when the midfielder came on in the second half and had a performance that pleased both the coaching staff and the fans.
ADAPTATION PERIOD
After a period of 17 days of training, Alcaraz is fully adapted to the team's style of play. This time was essential for coach Tite to better understand the player's qualities and potential on the field, preparing him for future important challenges with Mais Querido.
MILLIONAIRE HIRING
Carlos Alcaraz arrived at Flamengoin a negotiation that involved 17.6 million euros (approximately R$108 million), with Flamengo acquiring 80% of its economic rights from Southampton, from England. The midfielder, who is just 21 years old, signed a five-year contract with the Rio club, valid until August 2029.
