A recent idol and protagonist of historic moments, Gabigol said goodbye to Flamengo at the end of 2024. Rodolfo Landim's management chose not to renew the former number 99's contract , a decision that the former president himself explained in an interview with Penido's Podcast.

"Do you think Flamengo could have kept Gabigol? Man, that's a tough question for someone who had the power to do it. Gabigol is an idol to me and to all Flamengo fans . He will remain in the history books. What he did for Flamengo will be remembered forever," Landim stated, before adding:
"The results we had in 2023 and 2024 didn't make sense to sign a contract for another five years, which was the length he wanted. A lower amount would be fine, but it was a lot of money. He's still a young and valuable player, but the club needs to manage its finances responsibly. We need to consider the total cost, not just the salary, and ensure the decision is sustainable for Flamengo," he concluded.
Gabigol arrived at Flamengo in January 2019, on loan from Inter Milan (ITA), and had a memorable year: he scored the goals in the Libertadores Cup title and was a key player in the club's seventh Brazilian championship . In 2020, the club acquired his rights outright for R$79 million.
In six seasons wearing the Sacred Mantle, the striker played 306 games, scored 161 goals , gave 43 assists and won: two Libertadores, two Brasileiros, two Copa do Brasil, two Supercopas do Brasil, one Recopa Sudamericana and four Cariocas.
While Gabigol begins his career at Cruzeiro, Flamengo turns its attention to the Brasileirão . This Saturday (9), at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), the team faces Mirassol at Maracanã, in the 19th round. Mengão aims for victory to remain at the top of the competition.

On Saturday night (09), Flamengo beat Mirassol 2-1 , in the 19th round of the Brasileirão. Léo Pereira and Gonzalo Plata scored the goals that guaranteed three fundamental points to keep Rubro-Negro in the lead.

The first goal came in the first half, with Léo Pereira latching onto a precise cross from Samuel Lino. In the second half, the South American partnership shone: in the 23rd minute, Arrascaeta found Plata in an excellent position , and the Ecuadorian finished to extend the lead.

Coach Filipe Luís had a special birthday this Saturday (09). On the day he turned 40, the coach saw Flamengo reach the mark of 101 goals under his command . The feat occurred at Maracanã, during the 2-1 victory over Mirassol , in the 19th round of the Brasileirão.
The 100th goal came on a precise header from Léo Pereira , following a move initiated by Arrascaeta and a perfect cross from Samuel Lino from the left. Shortly after, the 101st goal came again from the left: Arrascaeta hit a trivela to Gonzalo Plata, who finished to extend the red-and-black lead.
The match also marked Filipe Luís's 60th game as Flamengo 's manager. The former full-back took over in October 2024, following Tite's departure, leaving the club's youth academy to manage the first team . The coach is aiming to become the first to complete a full season at Mengão since Vanderlei Luxemburgo in 2014.
Flamengo returns to the field next Sunday (August 17) to face Internacional , in the 20th round of the Brazilian Championship. The match will be played at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), at Beira-Rio, in Porto Alegre, with the aim of maintaining the leadership of the competition.
Before facing Internacional in the Brasileirão, Flamengo will have to face the same opponent, but in another competition: the Copa Libertadores da América . Mengão hosts Colorado this Wednesday (13) at 9:30 pm (Brasília time) at Maracanã in the first leg of the round of 16 of the continental competition.
Mengão made four signings in the current window and the coach praised the club's board's efforts to bring in the necessary players.
