The Brazilian Championship has a new leader! On Thursday night (13), Flamengo beat Grêmio 2-1, at Maracanã, in a match valid for the 8th round of the Brasileirão. Luiz Araújo was the highlight of the match, scoring the two winning goals for the Rio team, while Edenílson reduced the score for the visitors.

With the triumph, the team led by Tite reached 17 points and took the provisional lead of the Brazilian Championship. Mengão has one more point than Botafogo, who have one game less. On the other hand, Grêmio remained with 6 points and occupies 13th place in the table.

A GAME MARKED BY ABSENCES

Both teams faced important absences at Maracanã, resulting in a very truncated first half without great opportunities. Grêmio started threatening, but Pavón and João Pedro were unable to convert their chances into goals.

INJURIES AND SUBSTITUTIONS

During the first half, Flamengo suffered from two injuries. Everton Cebolinha felt his right leg and was replaced by Bruno Henrique, while Igor Jesus sprained his left foot and left the field on a stretcher, giving way to Luiz Araújo.

It was precisely Mengão's number 7 who opened the scoring in the final stretch of the first half. In a quick counterattack, Luiz Araújo hit a beautiful shot from outside the area, scoring Flamengo's first goal.

In the second half, Flamengo had a penalty awarded in the first minutes, but the decision was annulled after consulting the VAR. Even so, the team continued to press and increased the score. Once again in a counterattack, Pedro found Luiz Araújo, who hit well, with no chance for goalkeeper Rafael Cabral.

GRÊMIO'S ATTEMPTS AND GOAL OF HONRA

After the second goal, Grêmio tried to create more chances, but remained ineffective. Flamengo still had two good opportunities to expand, but Pedro shot over the goal in the first and, in the second, stopped after a great save by Rafael Cabral. In stoppage time, Edenílson scored for Grêmio, but it was too late. The match ended 2-1 for Flamengo, guaranteeing the provisional leadership of the Brasileirão.
