After Flamengo's 2-1 victory over Criciúma this Saturday (20), Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol, gave an interview to Premiere in which he expressed dissatisfaction with his situation at the club. He stated that certain commitments regarding his stay at Mengão were not fulfilled. His manager, Júnior Pedroso, also spoke about the matter on social media.

In Instagram stories, Pedroso defended the attacker: “No matter how hard they try, no one will ever erase your shine, your love and his history that he built with Flamengo”. The statement came amid speculation about Gabigol's future at the club, whose contract ends in December this year.

Flamengo president Rodolfo Landim decided not to renew the player's contract, despite the outcry of fans. Gabigol, who has an offer from Palmeiras and almost left the club in the middle of the year, will remain at Flamengo at least until the end of the season, after negotiations with Alviverde failed to reach an agreement.

During the interview, Gabigol expressed his frustration with Flamengo's management, leaving his future at the club open. However, after the game at Mané Garrincha, in Brasília, the player was applauded by the fans, who used social media to ask Landim to reconsider and renew the striker's contract.

Gabriel Barbosa is a two-time Brazilian and world champion. Libertadores with Flamengo, and is currently on the bench under the command of Tite. With the victory over Criciúma, where Gabigol scored one of the goals, the player seeks to end the season in a positive way, leaving the controversies behind and focusing on his performance on the field.

Flamengo and Vasco face each other this Sunday, at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã, in the Rio classic valid for the 26th round of the Brasileirão. The clash will mark the reunion between coach Tite, from Rubro-Negro, and Philippe Coutinho, from Cruzmaltino, years after their partnership in the Brazilian National Team, where they experienced moments of success and also frustration.

Sub Under Tite's command, Coutinho enjoyed the peak of his career with the Seleção, standing out in the 2018 World Cup, when he scored two goals and provided two assists in five games. Furthermore, he was a key player in winning the 2019 Copa América, taking advantage of Neymar's absence due to injury. This was Tite's only title as head of the national team.

Coutinho played 68 games for the Brazilian national team, 51 of them under the command of Tite, who is a great admirer of the 32-year-old midfielder. During the period, Coutinho scored 17 goals, becoming the third highest scorer of the Tite era, behind only Neymar and Gabriel Jesus. He also contributed six assists.

One of the most memorable moments of the partnership between the two came in November 2016, when Coutinho made a beautiful move and opened the scoring in the 3-0 victory over Argentina, at Mineirão, impressing Tite and consolidating his position in the team.

Return after a month away

Philippe Coutinho is coach Rafael Paiva's main addition for this Sunday's classic. The player returns after a month away for physical reconditioning, a period in which he was also affected by Covid-19. His last appearance was in the draw with Bragantino, on August 3, when he came on in the second half.

Since returning to Vasco, Coutinho has participated in just four games, being a starter on two occasions, accumulating 94 minutes in the field. During training, he suffered a muscle injury to his left thigh, which sidelined him.

Last Saturday (14), Rodrigo Dunshee and Rodolfo Landim, prominent figures in the current administration of Flamengo, participated in a meeting with the club's members. The event, held at Flamengo's headquarters, aimed to bring the team led by Landim closer to the supporting partners, reinforcing the commitment to the continuity of the projects that have been implemented under the current administration.

The team's motto , "to remain champion in everything", reflects the desire to keep Flamengo at the top in various sports. Under Landim's leadership, the club achieved important achievements in football, but the team's proposal goes beyond professional football. The intention is to continuously invest in other sporting areas and in the structure of the club as a whole.

In the recent clash against Bahia, in the second game of the quarter-finals of the Copa do Brasil, Flamengoguaranteed its qualification for the semi-finals with a narrow 1-0 victory. However, what caught the most attention was the performance of Gabigol, who, even with Pedro's departure due to injury, still failed to stand out and live up to the fans' expectations. This scenario reignited discussions about his role in the team, especially under Tite's command.

The match against Bahia was the first since the arrival of Tite, a coach who has high expectations from Flamengo fans. With Pedro out of action, the expectation was that Gabigol would take on a greater role, especially in his role as a centralized striker. However, the coach made a different choice during the game: instead of positioning Gabi as the classic number 9, Tite chose to use him in a deeper role, which limited his finishing opportunities.

A NEW GABIGOL

In the post-game press conference, Tite explained this decision. According to the coach, Gabigol has the ability to perform two roles on the field: as a reference striker, that is, a center forward, and also as a player who plays further back, articulating plays and distributing passes. Tite highlighted that these are the positions in which the number 99 can play with greater efficiency, something he had already observed during Gabigol's time with the Brazilian team.

“He can play behind a number 9 or as the 9. These are his two functions. We have already seen this both here and in the National Team. In this game, with Bruno Henrique already worn out, Gabigolended up playing deeper, centralized, helping with creation. I don't see him playing like he did at Santos. He works and trains for these two roles”, explained the coach.

Gabigol's performance has not been the best. His last goal came on July 20, against Criciúma, from a penalty kick. Since then, the attacker has shown difficulties in finding his way to the net. And, with Pedro's departure, fans expect him to take on a more decisive role. However, this hope did not materialize in the game against Bahia, generating even more questions about his future at the club.
