Flamengo is ending the year 2023, already focused on 2024, mainly on its squad and the possible reinforcements that could arrive to complete the team. Wendell, from Zenit (RUS) is one of these stars, with whom the Gávea club's board of directors was already in contact in the middle of this year, but was unable to make much progress with negotiations.
Still in August, journalist Raisa Simplício reported that a verbal agreement had taken place between Mais Querido and the midfielder. Simplício disclosed that, in a conversation with friends and his agent, Wendell had stated that, in the next transfer window (1st period: January 11, 2024 to March 7, 2024), he would leave for Rio de Janeiro.
"We're close. Next time, I'll go to Flamengo", said the midfielder, as he has a contract with the Russian club until July 2027. In August, Flamengo offered around 15 million euros (R$ 78 million) to Zenit for Wendel. However, Saint Petersburg officials denied Rubro-Negro's offer. Thus, the two teams ended the negotiation.
At the moment, Wendel would be joining the squad to compete for a place with Erick Pulgar, Thiago Maia and Gerson, as they play in the same position as the Russian team player. Given the Chilean's performance throughout this season, it is most likely that he will continue as one of the pillars of the defense.
This season, Wendel played 17 games for Zenit, in which he scored four goals and provided six assists. The Brazilian has been in Russia since 2020, when he left Sporting (POR). For the Saint Petersburg team, the midfielder has already participated in 105 matches.
