The new FIFA Club World Cup continues to create something to talk about. The competition that will take place in the United States between June and July will last one month, which should cause a major problem for the CBF to put together its annual football calendar. This is because, with the competition taking place in the middle of the year and Brazilian teams already classified as Flamengo, Fluminense and Palmeiras, the entity that manages Brazilian football will have to find alternatives.

The three clubs (which could become four if Botafogo, São Paulo or Atlético-MG is this year's Libertadores champion) will have been removed from the main national competition for a period that could reach nine rounds of the Brasileirão, as was the case, for example, during the 2024 Copa América. According to journalist Rodrigo Mattos, from UOL, the club committee discusses possibilities to reduce dates, the main measure proposed would be a reduction in state dates, but smaller clubs are against the idea.

“The CBF needs to resolve the loss nine dates a year. To give you an idea of the challenge, this represents around a quarter of the Brazilian Championship (38 dates), more than half of the State Championships (16 dates) and a good part of the Libertadores games (13 dates). There are those who defend the reduction of state clubs, such as Flamengo and Palmeiras”, wrote the journalist.

“But there is great resistance from smaller clubs with a loss of revenue and from state federations. The São Paulo Football Federation, for example, has already tried to renew its contract with Record until 2029 to impose its 16 dates that clutter the national calendar”, he added.

The calendar may have problems in its assembly for the next few years. In addition to the 2025 Club World Cup, 2026 will be the year of the World Cup, where there is a stoppage around the globe. In 2027, Brazil will host the Women's World Cup and the CBF has already announced that it intends to stop games in the country during the event.

“As no one invented an extra month in the annual calendar, the only solution would be to play matches in prime competitions within the FIFA dates. In other words, the teams would return to playing without their starters in important games. And the CBF board would lose the only progress it made in its calendar”, concluded Mattos.
