In the last confrontation between Flamengo and Fluminense, valid for the Rio championship, a controversy took over the game and had repercussions beyond the four lines. Renowned sports journalist Mauro Cezar Pereira expressed his dissatisfaction with the refereeing, specifically in relation to the failure to award a penalty to Leo Pereira, Flamengo's defender, during the clash against rival Tricolor. The move in question occurred at a crucial moment in the match, generating heated debates about the referees' actions.
The incident that triggered Mauro Cezar's criticism occurred when Leo Pereira was involved in a move inside the area, where there was unequivocal contact between the red and black defender and a Fluminense player. However, to the surprise of many, the referee chose not to award the maximum penalty, a decision that generated outrage among fans and, subsequently, gained prominence in the sports media.
INCISIVE IN WORDS AND CRITIQUES
The performance of the referees and the use of the video referee (VAR) were also criticized by Mauro Cezar and other sports analysts. Above all, the discussion became even more intense due to the possibility of reviewing the move by VAR, a tool designed to correct crucial refereeing errors. However, even given the availability of this technology, the decision remained unchanged, leaving questions about its effectiveness and impartiality.
It is important to highlight that the debate surrounding the referees' actions was not limited to just the match between Flamengo and Fluminense, but it reverberated throughout the context of Brazilian football. The transparency and reliability of arbitration decisions became central topics of discussion, with several experts and fans expressing their concern about the integrity and impartiality of competitions.
In an interview after the game, Mauro Cezar highlighted the seriousness of the incident and emphasized the need for a more rigorous analysis by the authorities responsible for Rio de Janeiro football. His criticism was not limited only to the failure to award the penalty, but also to the general quality of refereeing in the region, pointing to a possible need to review and improve the protocols and procedures adopted.

Corinthians idol, the goalkeeper was fundamental in Mengão's title in 2020 and shone again against Rubro-Negro in the Brasileirão

One of Corinthians ' greatest idols, goalkeeper Cássio has a special chapter in Flamengo's recent history, even though he never wore the red-and-black jersey. In 2020, his performance in Corinthians' draw against Internacional was crucial in the Rio de Janeiro club's Brasileirão title victory.
In the final round of that championship, Flamengo and Internacional were neck and neck for the trophy. Flamengo lost to São Paulo at Morumbi Stadium and, to retain the trophy , depended on a slip-up from their Rio Grande do Sul rival. At Beira-Rio Stadium, Corinthians held on for a draw thanks to Cássio's saves, preventing the Colorado victory and confirming the title for Mengão.
The episode has remained etched in the memories of Flamengo fans. In a recent interaction, a Flamengo influencer reminded the goalkeeper of the feat. " You know you're a national idol, right?" he asked. In a relaxed tone, Cássio replied: "Yes, we won that title, didn't we? Two thousand and…?" The fan added: "2020 !"
Last Thursday (2), in a duel valid for the Brazilian Championship, Cássio was once again highlighted against Flamengo, now defending Cruzeiro . The goalkeeper made important saves at Maracanã , guaranteeing a goalless draw and frustrating the red-black team's search for three more points.
With no time to lament the result, Flamengo is already concentrating its efforts on the next match of the competition. This Sunday (5), the team led by Filipe Luís faces Bahia, at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), at Arena Fonte Nova, in Salvador. The match will be valid for the 27th round and will be broadcast exclusively on the Premiere channel.
