Flamengo and Bahia meet for the third time in the history of the Copa do Brasil, in a duel that marks another chapter of this competition. On the two previous occasions, Flamengo managed to qualify, advancing in the 1990 and 2000 editions. Now, the clubs' reunion brings to light the retrospect and the expectation of another decisive clash.
In 1990 , the teams faced each other in the quarterfinals. The first game took place at the Joia da Princesa Stadium, in Feira de Santana, where the result was a 1-1 draw. Bahia played at home, with the support of the fans, and managed to keep the score balanced, but Flamengo secured a important advantage for the second confrontation. In the return match, held in Juiz de Fora, Flamengo won 1-0, confirming their classification for the next phase of the competition.
Ten years later, in 2000, the teams faced each other again, this time in the round of 16. The first clash was played at the Fonte Nova Stadium, in Salvador, and Flamengo came away with a 3-1 victory, opening up a good lead for the second leg. Bahia, which once again had the support of its fans, was unable to hold back the momentum of the Rio team. In the return game, at Maracanã, the 1-1 draw was enough for Flamengo to guarantee classification once again.
These two previous meetings show a favorable record for Flamengo, who managed to advance on both occasions. However, each game has its own story and football always brings surprises. The Copa do Brasil is a competition known for its unpredictability, and even with a positive record, Flamengo cannot afford to underestimate their opponent.
Bahia, in turn, seeks to change the plot of this confrontation. With two eliminations behind them, the Bahian team enters the field with the aim of breaking this cycle and advancing in the competition. Tite defined Flamengo and announced the 11 starters who will face Peñarol, this Thursday, at Maracanã, at 7pm. De la Cruz returns to the starting lineup in place of Léo Ortiz, and Alex Sandro and Plata were retained. The duel with the Uruguayans is the first between the teams in the quarter-finals of the Copa Conmebol Libertadores.

Alex Sandro and Plata, debutants in last Sunday's classic, remain in the team after having good performances in the draw against Vasco. Gabigol is now out of the relationship due to fibrosis in the posterior muscle of his right thigh. Flamengo, in a statement, reported that the athlete did not suffer any injury in the region. "The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that the athlete Gabriel Barbosa underwent tests that did not diagnose an injury to the posterior muscle of his right thigh. However, the Technical Committee opted for precaution and did not list him for the duel against Peñarol due to fibrosis in the region. Gabi is handed over to physiotherapists and physical trainers for the series of decisive games of the season."

Red-and-black striker is the target of speculation in the transfer market

This Monday (16), rumors emerged involving Bahia's interest in signing Gabigol, striker from Mais Querido. According to the channel Paparazzo Rubro-Negro, Tricolor de Aço would have entered the dispute for Gabigol, who has a contract with Flamengojust until December this year. In addition to Bahia, clubs such as Corinthians, Cruzeiro, Grêmio, Palmeiras and Santos would also be keeping an eye on the player.
Despite the speculation, the Bahia board was quick to deny any ongoing negotiations to count on the shirt 99 from Mengão. According to the club's leadership, there is no intention of repeating an operation similar to that carried out with Everton Ribeiro.
As soon as news of the supposed interest began to circulate, Bahia tried to clarify the situation. In a statement, the club's senior management stated that there are no negotiations to sign Gabigol for next season. The information of possible interest, therefore, was directly denied by Tricolor's directors.
Even so, the attacker remains one of the most targeted names in the transfer market for 2025, as he is in the final stretch of contract with Flamengoand you can now sign a pre-contract with any other team.
With Bahia's denial, Corinthians remains the main favorite to sign Gabigol from next year. The possibility of the red-black striker wearing the Timão shirt gains strength, especially after coach Tite appointed Gabigol as the third option for Mengão's attacking command, behind Pedro and Bruno Henrique.
