Full-back reaches 30 games with the Sacred Mantle with an outstanding performance at Maracanã and receives praise on social media
|
The left-back, who has played 30 games for the red-and-black team, had one of his best performances since joining the club. With defensive consistency and a constant presence in the attacking half, he was a key player in Filipe Luis' strategy to suffocate the Ecuadorians from the moment they had the ball.
Despite still sharing space with Ayrton Lucas in the squad, Alex Sandro took advantage of the opportunity as a starter to show why he has been gaining more and more trust from the coach and support from the fans . It was his play that started the first goal, scored by Luiz Araújo, still in the first half.
The origin of the goal reflects the performance of the number 26. After being disarmed in the attacking field, he quickly presented himself as an option on the left, received a pass from Michael , dribbled past the marker with ease and crossed with precision. The ball was deflected, and Luiz Araújo took advantage of the rebound to open the scoring.
Flamengo controlled most of the game with possession of the ball and territorial imposition. In this scenario, Alex Sandro had the freedom to position himself more inside, as an auxiliary midfielder in the build-up play. But he also had the freedom to attack the back line, as in the decisive play. In the 90 minutes on the field, the full-back accumulated numbers that reinforce his solid performance: 81% passing accuracy, four disarms, three fouls suffered and 14 duels on the ground, winning more than half of them.
The performance also marks Alex Sandro 's 30th game with the Manto Sagrado. The number takes into account official matches and the pre-season friendly against São Paulo. During this period, Flamengo won 17 games, drew 9 and lost only 4 with him on the field. The full-back's offensive numbers are still modest: one goal scored and one assist. But his influence in key plays, such as the one on Thursday, shows an athlete who contributes much more than just cold statistics.
Flamengo coach admits difficulties in the "final third", but highlights the striker's commitment and importance in the collective model

Flamengo beat LDU 2-0, securing an advantage in the match and taking another step towards the next phase of the Copa Sul-Americana. But the positive result at Maracanã, on Thursday night (15), was not enough to stop the fans' criticism of Michael. The striker had an irregular performance, was booed and became one of the main topics of Filipe Luís's press conference after the game.
The coach chose to defend the number 19, highlighting his dedication and the collective role he played during the match. Even though he acknowledged that Michael has had difficulty making decisions in the final third of the field, Filipe made a point of praising the striker's combative spirit and his importance in the game system.
"I always think of a phrase that defines it: no one is more important than the team. Everyone has to sacrifice themselves for the team. And we win that way, or we get closer to winning that way," said Filipe Luís.
Michael started the match as a starter, was active in the opening minutes and, according to the coach, helped to stifle the Ecuadorian team's ball possession. He ended up being substituted 11 minutes into the second half, making way for Everton Cebolinha. The fans' irritation became apparent as the striker made mistakes in passing and making decisions close to the area.
For Filipe, the pressure from the fans was a factor that directly influenced the striker's performance. According to him, nervousness impacted his decision-making and contributed to his drop in performance throughout the game. Michael had a brief stint with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia before returning to Flamengo at the beginning of the season. Since then, he has been trying to recover the form that led him to be one of the top scorers in the Brasileirão in 2021, when he scored 14 goals.
Despite the current fluctuation, Filipe reinforced that the player has been one of the most dedicated in training. According to the coach, Michael strives daily to improve precisely in the aspects that are most demanded. The coach's response also serves as a message to the fans. Although the technical phase is far from ideal, the striker's dedication is still valued internally. And this, in the current game model proposed by Filipe Luís, has a relevant weight.
Rubro-Negro's new assistant coach is already working on preparing set pieces and earning the respect of players and staff

Former defender Rodrigo Caio closely followed Flamengo's 2-0 triumph over LDU in the group stage of the Libertadores, directly from the Maracanã booth, alongside director José Boto. In his first performance as a member of the technical committee, the new assistant saw Mais Querido return to good form and get closer to qualifying for the knockout stages.
During a press conference, coach Filipe Luís commented on Rodrigo Caio's arrival and showed complete confidence in the former athlete's work. "I understood that a change was needed, I told Boto about this change in the committee (...) I immediately approved (Rodrigo Caio's arrival) because I know the person, the character and the professional he can be, he is still young, has a lot to learn and came to add to the club", he declared.
Rodrigo Caio was added to the coaching staff to replace Daniel Alegria, who was in charge of training set pieces. In his first days of playing, Mengão scored twice — the first goal was scored by Léo Ortiz, with a header, during a rehearsed play. The result brought more peace to the red-and-black environment.
According to Filipe Luís, the new assistant coach has contributed mainly in the defensive sector. “ The players really respect a person of integrity like Rodrigo and with the history he has , and yes, he is also helping with set pieces, together with Marcinho, with our analysts, all the set pieces were prepared and trained”, explained the coach.
Rodrigo Caio has been working together with Márcio Torres, referred to by Filipe Luís as “Marcinho”, in setting up tactical plays. His recent experience on the field and knowledge of the club have been seen as assets at this new stage in his career.
