Brazil is on a new level in artistic gymnastics: team medalist. This Wednesday, Flamengo athletes Rebeca Andrade and Flávia Saraiva, together with Jade Barbosa, Lorrane Oliveira and Júlia Soares put on a show in the final in Antwerp and achieved an unprecedented podium for the country: silver for women's teams in a World Cup. Brazil was second only to the United States, led by Simone Biles. France took bronze.

For decades, a team medal at a World Cup was seen as a distant dream, something that was only within the reach of powers like the United States, Russia, China and Romania. Guided by Rebeca and Flavinha, the Brazilians showed last year that they had reached a new level, that of medalist teams. By less than a point, bronze escaped at the Liverpool World Cup. In Belgium, with Jade's reinforcement, the unprecedented medal came, crowning the group that also qualified for the Paris Olympics.

The celebration was big and full of tears. Not for nothing. Jade Barbosa, aged 32, returned to the World Cup podium after 13 years to receive her third medal - she already had two bronzes. Rebeca has won five World Cup medals - she also has two Olympic medals. Flávia Saraiva, Lorrane Oliveira, Júlia Soares and reserve Carolyne Pedro stood on the podium of a major gymnastics competition for the first time.

It's the work of many people. A giant list. Today we establish the Brazilian gymnastics school. We made incredible choices. We are so happy. We show that our work is on the right track. We thought we could third, but second place is much better - said Jade Barbosa.

Brazil scored 165.530 points this Wednesday, surpassing the qualifying mark by more than one point (164.297) even without having a discard note in the final and counting on a fall on the beam. Thus, she rose two positions in the ranking, even bothering the Americans, champions with 167,729 points thanks to a great night from Simone Biles. France made a decision without major errors to reach the podium with 164,064 points.

Gabigol continues to be an important figure behind the scenes at Flamengo, despite not being on good terms with coach Tite. With 26 matches in the 2024 season, only three as a starter, and four goals scored, the number 99 has only three months left on his contract with the club, which already allows him to sign a pre-contract with another team.

In June, the player received an offer to renew his contract for another year, but he refused. Flamengo's president, Rodolfo Landim, revealed that the offer is still available, highlighting that confidence in Gabigol's recovery is the reason behind this proposal. “When we make a proposal, we analyze the entire context. We believe in Gabriel’s potential and that’s why we offered him a renewal for another year”, explained Landim in an interview with TNT Sports, stating that he still maintains the offer to the player.

RENEWAL AND POSSIBILITY OF PRE-CONTRACT

The attacker's situation is delicate. With less than six months left on his contract, Gabigol is free to negotiate with other clubs. However, Flamengo showed interest in keeping him, as they have done with other important players in the past, such as Filipe Luís and Bruno Henrique.

According to Landim, the club is not willing to offer a long contract in the past. current performance conditions of the player. “With the performance of 2023 and part of 2024, it is difficult to make a four-year proposal at the requested values”, stated the president, reinforcing that the one-year renewal proposal remains available and that it now depends on the player’s own decision.< /p>

TITE AND MERITOCRACY IN FLAMENGO

The president also addressed the reasons why Gabigol has not been a choice frequent in the starting lineup. According to Landim, the word "bet" used to describe the renewal proposal may have been strong, but it is justified by the attacker's performance in training. Coach Tite, known for his meritocracy, has opted for Bruno Henrique and Carlinhos due to their better performance in activities and games.

“Tite is a meritocrat par excellence. He chooses who is best in training and games to choose. This transparent process is one of the reasons why he is so respected by the team", concluded Landim.

Brazil ended its participation in the Paris Paralympics this Sunday (8) with its best campaign in the history of the competition. According to the objective established by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee, the Brazilian delegation in Paris broke the record for medals in a single edition of the Games, with 89, achieved the highest number of golds, 25, and secured the unprecedented top 5 in the medals table.

It was not easy to secure fifth place. After spending the first few days among the five best countries at the Paralympics, Brazil came to occupy eighth place in the medals quarter at the end of Thursday (5), four days before the end of the Games. But from Friday (6) recovery came. With four gold medals won, Brazil reached seventh place and came up against France and Italy, which would become the great opponent for fifth place.

Medal after medal, Brazil and Italy fought for the top 5 in the table of medals. On Saturday (7), Brazilian athletes secured the country's best day in the history of the Paralympics with six golds, three silvers and seven bronzes, and sixth place in the classification. With such a performance, Brazil surpassed the 72 podiums and 22 gold medals from Tokyo 2022, achieving its best campaign in both categories.

However, it still lacked a position in the top five. The Italians had 24 gold medals, one more gold medal than Brazil, and slept in fifth place. That would change this Sunday morning (8).

In the first events of the last day of the race, Brazil won two more gold medals and overtook Italy. First, Fernando Rufino was champion in canoeing, winning gold in the 200m VL2 and leaving the countries tied. The race also had another Brazilian on the podium. Igor Tofalini finished in second place and took silver. Then, in the event that would bring the top 5 to Brazil, Tayana Medeiros broke the Paralympic record by lifting 156kg in the 86kg category and took gold.

Italy did not win any competition and no longer competes in competitions. Thus, Brazil guaranteed its best campaign in the history of the Paralympics. The great Brazilian highlights, as usual, were athletics, which reached its 200th medals won, and swimming, with 36 for the first and 26 for the second discipline.
