Playing away from home, Brazil was no match for Paraguay. Coach Dorival Júnior's team conceded the goal at the beginning of the match and did not have the strength to overcome the home team's defensive strength. Even with a slight improvement in the second half, the green and yellow team lacked creativity, failed to score and suffered another defeat in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Summary

Even when paired with Real Madrid's three strikers (Endrick, Vini Jr. and Rodrygo), Brazil had serious difficulties attacking Paraguay. In the first half, the team led by Dorival Júnior had 87% possession of the ball, but was unable to finish on goal. In a rare appearance in attack, Paraguay opened the scoring with a beautiful three-finger shot from Diego Gómez.

In the final stage, Dorival sent Luiz Henrique and João Pedro onto the field, and the team improved slightly, taking more danger from the ends. However, Paraguay knew how to defend itself, held the ball up front with Isidro Pitta and gave Brazil no chance at Defensores del Chaco. In the end, based on desperation, the Seleção still had chances to score with Vini Jr. and Gerson, but not enough to seek a draw.

What now?

In the next round of qualifiers, the Seleção faces Chile, in Santiago. Next, on national soil, the green and yellow team face Peru - the last placed team in the competition. The two games will be in the second week of October.

Guillermo Varela, right-back of Flamengo , was called up by coach Marcelo Bielsa to represent the Uruguayan National Team in the first two rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The player will participate in the clashes against Paraguay, on September 6th, and against Venezuela, on 10th of the same month.

Varela's call-up comes at a time of attention for Flamengo, as the full-back left the field last Sunday (September 1st) with pain in his hip, during the Brazilian Championship match. The situation of the athlete, who has been an important part of Flamengo's tactical scheme, raises concerns about his availability both for commitments with the club and for matches with the Uruguayan national team.

VARELA HAS ALERT ON

A hip injury is a condition that requires special care, especially for a player who plays in a position that requires high physical intensity, such as right back. Flamengo has not yet released a bulletin doctor detailed about Varela's condition, but the expectation is that he will be re-evaluated in the coming days to determine the severity of the injury and the necessary recovery time.

Varela's call-up to the Uruguayan national team is a recognition of his recent performance, both for Flamengo and in previous appearances with the national team. Marcelo Bielsa, known for his demanding tactical style and his clinical eye for talent, chose Varela to form a defense that will need solidity to face traditional opponents in South America, such as Paraguay and Venezuela.
