Botafogo's recent thrashing of Flamengo, with a score of 4-1, not only shook the red-hot fans black, but it also generated an exchange of barbs between club directors. The president of Flamengo, Rodolfo Landim, expressed his dissatisfaction with the investments made by John Textor, owner of Botafogo's SAF (Sociedade Anônima de Futebol), raising doubts about the rival's compliance with Financial Fair Play.

After the defeat in the classic played at the Nilton Santos Stadium, Landim was questioned by members of Flamengo about the team's performance. In response, the director highlighted Botafogo's high investments, which, according to him, exceed the club's revenue.

"Welcome to the times of SAF without Financial Fair Play. I think that only this year will they They have already invested 75 million euros (around R$450 million), that is, approximately the number you presented as being since 2021. This is for a club that had a turnover of R$322 million last year", commented Landim.

JOHN TEXTOR DEFENDS BOTAFOGO'S FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

John Textor, upon learning of Landim's statements, did not hesitate to respond. In an interview with the newspaper "O Globo", the North American refuted the accusations and presented data that, according to him, prove Botafogo's compliance with financial rules.

"He (Landim) is a lovely guy , but that's wrong... Our salaries now represent 45% of revenues... I'm sure he would be surprised by our revenues, but we surpassed US$100 million (R$540 million) last year... Much higher than most people in the Brazil would think... and we publish these numbers on our website. Financial Fair Play suggests that salary should be less than 75% of revenue... Therefore, we would be in full compliance with European rules," said Textor.

BOTAFOGO'S RECORD SIGNATIONS IN 2024

Botafogo's high investments mentioned by Landim refer to the most expensive signings in the history of Brazilian football, made by the club in 2024. At the beginning of the season, Botafogo acquired winger Luiz Henrique for R$106.6 million. In the mid-year transfer window, the club surprised by bringing in Thiago Almada for R$137.4 million. These operations reinforced the team, which now leads the Brazilian Championship and is advancing strongly in the competitions.

In the relationship between Gabigol and coach Tite at Flamengo, only the field is capable of speaking. Between the striker and coach, there is practically no dialogue, and the cold and silent war dictates that only one of them should remain at the club for the season in 2025.

No atmosphere with the coaching staff and also with the squad , Gabriel Barbosa has been convinced to change and airs, but even the clubs that expressed interest in the first half of the year backed away. With a contract at Flamengo until the end of December, Gabigol had offers from Palmeiras, Corinthians and Santos, was mentioned at Grêmio, but did not want to sign a pre-contract with any team.

The expectation was to try to turn things around on top in the second half, otherwise he would end his time at Flamengo like the idol he became, without any fuss.

Tite's arrival last year changed the entire perspective of the striker, who was already in a bad phase previously, and lost his place once and for all to Pedro with the presence of the new coach. With the center forward's recent injury, Tite kept Gabigol at the end of the line, under the argument that Carlinhos and Bruno Henrique perform better in the scheme with a reference man .

Without understanding the criteria, Gabi maintains her dedication to the basic level of professionalism in training, as it is not part of the coach's or the club's plans for a possible renewal. With the chances of a comeback practically buried, the two possible paths are to wait for the election in Flamengo to find out if Tite will remain with the next president; or wait for the end of the contract to freely listen to proposals again. Palmeiras and Santos have not yet given up on the idea, and Bahia appears as an option, as it has good investment capacity.
